admin-plugins vs mu-plugins folder

I am referring to an older article on wpmu.org and as the comments are closed there, I'd like to resume the discussion here: https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/wpmu-administration-plugins/

I liked the idea of having administration plugins (back end plugins) in that folder.

I even went a step further and adapted this for another folder called: my-plugins that are only run on the main blog.

The question is: is this approach outdated?

If not, how to combine it with the wordpress plugin updates and the wpmu.dev plugin-updater-notification-plugin?

I'd love to hear some thoughts on this...
