Appearance > Editor - Missing on Multisite

I need to add some code to the functions.php and the appearance > editor is missing. Is this something in the setting or is this theme related? I would rather not change the file itself so I can update the theme without having to add it to the file again.

Thank you.

    Hi there @Sean Scott

Welcome to WPMU DEV, glad to have you aboard!

In a multisite setup, themes and plugins can be edited in the network admin under themes/editor or plugins/editor.

Keep in mind though that any edits made via those tools simply change the file that is currently on your server. So when you update the theme or plugin, those files will be overwritten.

If you are going to be customizing your theme to a great extent, you would better off first creating a child-theme. You can then modify the heck outta the child-theme with zero risk of your edits getting overwritten when you update the parent.

This page in the WordPress codex explains how to create a child-theme:

I hope this helps! And thanks for being a member

Glad to have expert advice! It has been a lot of fun learning everything.

I am still getting used to MU and keep forgetting that I can go to the main admin to do all that. I am just doing some minor things and nothing major thankfully.

    Thank you very much.
