[Autoblog] Autoblog display issues

We're using Autoblogs to import basic article information from the subsites to our main site in our multisite, mentormarket.io. TIMM is the main site.
It worked on a couple of articles, but most are not displaying properly. Mainly, the featured image is not being pulled in. We're using a short excerpt for category page listings, but otherwise don't need all the content duplicated on the main site. I know I've made this work before, but it's frustrating us this time for some reason.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe

    Hi Nitrous Cloud,

    Hope you are doing good today. :slight_smile:

    When I checked your main sites dashboard, I could notice all the posts imported are at the moment linking to the subsites post automatically. Seems like you have temporarily changed the settings in Autoblog regarding this.

    However, I tested with a random feed "Scardy Cat" in my test system, and I could notice similar issue. On giving a closer look, the RSS feed isn't including the featured image, it's only listing out image added inside the page editor.

    So, when we test with your current setup, it'll only import images added inside the page editor as featured image. That could be the reason for the anomalies you notice.

    You could use a plugin to add featured images in the feeds, so that the images would get imported, would recommend you to use a plugin like:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/featured-images-for-rss-feeds/

    And see whether the above helps in resolving the issue. The current setting of "Find the first image withing content of a feed item" should be enough to recognise the featured images.

    You'll have to make sure to delete the already imported post, even from the trash, so that a new post would get generated. Please let us know how that goes. Have a great day ahead. :slight_smile:

    Best Regards,
    Nithin

    Hi Nithin,

    Thank you.

    When I checked your main sites dashboard, I could notice all the posts imported are at the moment linking to the subsites post automatically. Seems like you have temporarily changed the settings in Autoblog regarding this.

    I'm not sure what you mean. Is this affecting it adversely? I can't find which setting you're referring to.

    I just trashed the ones that were posted recently and ran the feeds again. It's working for some images, but not others. I'm sorry, but the technical side is over my head. This makes sense regarding your assessment? Would the above setting (post automatically) affect this?

    I'm hoping to avoid using another plugin to make this happen, since we have so many already. I had it working nicely on a test site. For some reason, it's not behaving now that we moved it to the live site. grumble grumble

    The RSS feed we're using is what was automatically provided. Could that be a factor? If so, who would we talk to?

    If Michael were up, he could help me avoid stupid questions. But I'm impatient and want this to really shine. :wink:

    Thanks again,
    Joe

    EDIT: I just noticed that some of our authors are using their images from other sources in their articles. These images don't even show up on their own blogs' home page. I know this is outside the use of the Autoblog plugin, but perhaps if they are setting them up differently, it'll help everyone. Any insight is appreciated.

    Making progress on tracking down possibilities:
    It's obviously not Autoblog.
    It's not our main site's theme.

    It appears to be a problem with retrieving images from our subsite. The same set up worked on the test site except for one point - Our feeds were from another temporary site where we hosted the articles.

    So how do we search, detect errors and fix the RSS feed from subsites? Is that a theme issue or something else?

    • Nitrous Cloud

      Continuing to make progress. Hopefully these updates help and don't push us down the line for getting a response.

      We've run all sorts of tests. There appears to be a problem with getting images to convey if they are hosted on our own subsites. If the image is hosted offsite, it comes through just fine. But it won't show if the author uploads it to his own subsite.

      We tried an external RSS feed. It worked fine.
      We tried setting up a different theme for the subsite. Still broken.
      We tried sending it to an external site. Still broken.
      So it appears to be an issue with our subsites unable to send images that are hosted on our site? Does that make sense? Maybe we're missing something.
      We are stumped.

    Hi Nitrous Cloud,

    Sorry for the delay in getting back, please do note that posting multiple replies would bring the ticket down the queue order, and hence the delay.

    I'm not sure what you mean. Is this affecting it adversely? I can't find which setting you're referring to.

    I meant, if you go to main site, and under Posts > All Posts, and try to view the posts, the link of the posts is pointing to the subsite post. If that's how you have intended, then it's okay.

    Could I know which exact external RSS feed worked in your system? On giving a closer look at your system, the issue is still related to RSS feeds not including the featured image in the feed.

    If the external RSS feed had featured image included, the Autoblog plugin would work fine. By default WordPress RSS doesn't include featured image, and I could notice the same in my local server too.

    The mentioned RSS plugin should have worked, it's odd that it didn't in your test. Could you please try adding the following code as a mu-plugins:

    <?php
    function featuredtoRSS($content) {
    global $post;
    if ( has_post_thumbnail( $post->ID ) ){
    $content = '<div>' . get_the_post_thumbnail( $post->ID, 'medium', array( 'style' => 'margin-bottom: 15px;' ) ) . '</div>' . $content;
    }
    return $content;
    }

    add_filter('the_excerpt_rss', 'featuredtoRSS');
    add_filter('the_content_feed', 'featuredtoRSS');

    And then please clear any cache enabled, and then make sure to delete already imported post, and re-try again, and see whether it helps?

    You can implement the above code as a mu-plugins:
    https://premium.wpmudev.org/manuals/wpmu-manual-2/using-mu-plugins/

    The above seems to work when tested in my local server, please let us know how that goes.

    Regards,
    Nithin

    Hi Nithin,
    We implemented the code, but it doesn't seem to help.
    Outside feeds are working nicely. An image shows up.
    Our own subsites don't post an image on the main site unless they include an image that isn't hosted on our domain. In that case, that image shows up as the featured image on our site.
    Still losing hair.
    Thanks
    Joe

    EDIT: by Michael
    What are all the superfluous src and setsrc here for? I noticed it with the mu-plugin as well:

    Hi Nitrous Cloud,

    That's odd, could I know on which exact subsite you tested the feeds again, after the code was added inside the mu-plugins?

    The src, and setsrc is added automatically within the WordPress side when the get_the_post_thumbnail function is used.

    I would like to test this further, if possible, could you please send us your credentials, so that we could give a closer look.

    You can send credentials by using our secure contact form: https://premium.wpmudev.org/contact/#i-have-a-different-question

    Hi Nitrous Cloud,

    Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, due to busy support ticket queues. I gave a closer look regarding this issue, and took the liberty to create a new subsite /wpmutest in your system, and checked the test post created in the already created /testing subsite, and tried to import into /wpmutest subsite.

    I could notice the issue with the feeds not working at all in your system. I tested further in my MU system, based on the way you have created the feeds etc, and could notice anomalies regarding this in an multisite environment.

    I'm bringing this into our developers attention to check whether there is any setting being missed regarding this, or if it's a possible bug, would check if there is any quick patch that could be implemented based on this behaviour.

    Will keep you updated once I get further feedback regarding this asap.

    Regards,
    Nithin
