Best Multisite Install For Addon Domains and Subdomains?

This will be my first multisite wp install and I want to get it right the first time if possible.

I have 19 domains, 1 primary and the rest are addon domains. I use subdomains on several of the addons and a few on the primary domain.

The host is hostmonster, with a dedicated ip. I have SSL on the primary with subdomains for secure links for credit card processing and others for secure access to facebook, etc.

I also want to host sites for the wp locu embedding so, performance needs to be good. Would like to consider what is best for SEO too.

What would be the best multisite configuration for what I am trying to do?

    Hi there @Chris

I hope you are well today and thanks for your question.

The first part is really going to be picking a good host, we done a review of some hosts here

For example, there are different types of hosts, for example with WPengine, it's fully managed and if you go for the $99 plan, you get the CDN (content delivery network).

The cache is all setup and preconfigured, it uses nGinx which is super quick and the whole setup is very quick

Another question would be, how many sites do you envisage being on the network, for the domains your going to want to look into a domain mapping plugin such as

Then for SEO, our Infinite SEO plugin works network wide across all multisite sites.

    Thanks for the quick response.

I've been with HM for 10 years, so will upgrade to the vm host when needed.

The main traffic will be on a cloud server, so no worries there.

I may have 200 - 300 domains before I upgrade, but I really don't think that would max out the host. Unless, there are some issues with wp handling that?

Really, just want to make sure I do the setup right for having addon domains and subdomains on the remainder. I couldn't find that in the documentation I looked at.

    Hi there Chris,

    Thanks for the additional information.

That should work fine then, WP won't have a problem with 200-300 sites, though some hosts might depending on the size of the sites in questions.

Our domain mapping plugin supports add-on domains

So when you add a site as a sub domain and then point the domain you want for that to the sub domain, that domain can be a add-on domain and it'll still work perfectly

    Thank you!

    Kind Regards
