best plugin for bilingual site with SiteOrigin

Hi. I would like to make my site bilingual but have been browsing to find out what plugins are availabe witht SiteOrigin pagebuilder that I´m using. But the posts I find are pretty old and not easy to understand. I am also a bit uncertain wherther bilingual plugins and translation plugins are the same (i read this post in your support https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/top-6-translation-plugins-for-your-wordpress-site/) ? Do you have any good advice on which plugins are best suited and if there are any good tutorials on how to use them/make a site bilingual? I have a veeery crude solution right now using links to different pages and I would really like to do this the right way.

    Hi Miriam,

I am also a bit uncertain wherther bilingual plugins and translation plugins are the same

Thanks for asking. For enabling Bilingual language support on your site, you will need plugins which will enable multiple language support on your site. On the other hand, translation plugins will help you in translating the plugin and theme strings to any specific language.

If you want to make your site bilingual, you can try WordPress multilingual plugins. There are a couple of plugins for making your site bilingual. Among them, WPML is the most popular: https://wpml.org/

To know how you can make your site bilingual with WPML, you can check this tutorial: http://www.wpbeginner.com/plugins/how-to-create-a-multilingual-wordpress-site-with-wpml/

Please keep in mind, WPML is a third party paid plugin and is not associated with us in any way. So please research well if this will serve your purpose or not before purchasing this plugin. I suggested this plugin based on my search on the Internet. We won't be liable in any way if this doesn't serve your purpose after purchasing.

There are also free alternatives like this one: https://wordpress.org/plugins/multilingual-press/

Please let us know if you have any confusion or any further query. We will be glad to help.

    Have a nice day. Cheers!

    Hi.
Long time but I´m picking up the thread on this as I had to put it away at the time. Some questions: I cheked out the tutorial link you sent where it also says: "WPML assumes that your existing content is in your site’s primary language."

In my present webpage I have pages and posts in both english and norwegian, meaning I have duplicates of almost every page and post, which I have written myself. I have used links in order to allow choice of language (like: "Norwegian- click here") this is the solution I am not happy with and would like to change. What I want is the one-button -at-the-top to change between languages.

I get a sense that this plugin is designed to be used on a webpage that has one language only. Do you know think I will get any trouble or technical problems by already having posts and pages in two languages when installing the plugin?

Then the big question: Say that I use English as the first language after installing the plugin: do you know if it will be possible to use the pages and posts that I have written in Norwegian as they are or must I expect an enormous amount of copy-and -paste-work and copy all the text from the norwegian pages and posts into a duplicate of each of the english pages?

I'm not expert on WPML, but it shoudn't be an issue because you can change language for some posts after installing plugin and setting up a default language.

Most of multi language plugins allow to change language of existing posts and make new relations between posts in two languages, so there is no need to create new posts. WPML is one of those plugins (also free Polylang allows for that https://wordpress.org/plugins/polylang/ )

But you can ask experts of WPML in pre-sales questions here https://wpml.org/purchase/pre-sales-questions/ to confirm this.

    kind regards,
    Kasia
