Blog Template: can't create new templates

I keep getting the error message "Whoops! The blog ID you posted is incorrect. You cannot template the main site. Please go back and try again. (Generated by New Blog Templates)"

I have tried to template a page on the main site (https://legacyness.com/journalist-home-default/) as well as a subdomain (https://template.legacyness.com/home/) and got the same message both times. Where exactly do I have to put it to save a template? Thanks

    Hello Michelle,

In New Blog Templates whole subsites are templates. So not pages on main site (and not the main site) or pages in subsite - it has to be whole subsite.
So in you case - create template from this subsite https://template.legacyness.com/ - you can use ID of that subsite or template word when creating new template (see here https://premium.wpmudev.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/new-blog-templates-1910-create-new.png ). You can check ID of subsite in Network -> Sites -> All Sites by editing that site - you will see id in the URL

if this wont work would you mind allowing support access so we can have a closer look at this?
To enable support access you can follow this guide here:
    http://premium.wpmudev.org/manuals/wpmu-dev-dashboard-enabling-staff-login/

    kind regards,

    Hi there

I have just created a template called "Copy Blog Template (8)" using "http://template.legacyness.com/" subsite which ID is 8. Would you please check and confirm?

I can also see there is already a created template. Did you create that one?

    Have a good day!

    Cheers

    Hi Ash,
I sucessfully created a template, and set it to default. When I added a new site, I again chose that template. When I clicked 'create' it loaded and loaded, and then I got an error. When I refreshed, the new site was there, but it was just the generic site, no template.

    Hello Michelle

Would you please enable debug mode and check if any error is shown in that page?

To enable debug mode please edit a line in your wp-config.php:
    Change

    define('WP_DEBUG', false);

    to

    define('WP_DEBUG', true);
    define('WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false);
    define('WP_DEBUG_LOG', true);

This will create a file called debug.log inside wp-content folder. Now try to create a new subsite and apply a template.

Please let us know what errors you see there.

In addition, did you make any modification in the template site? Like deleted anything or deactivated any plugin or something else?

    Have a good day!

    Cheers
    Ash

    Hello Ash,
I had an issue earlier where I could not create new sites at all. Another developer fixed it and sent this report: "The wordpress database was missing a table, SSL certificate was not installed for subdomains, and apache .htaccess was not configured for http to https rewrite. After creating a new site, you will need to click on the link to go to the dashboard. If you get a gateway timeout error, click on the reload/refresh button. The reason the timeout happens is because it is generating the entire site for the first time. Once it finishes generating, you will be able to go to [subdomain].legacyness.com. It will likely give an error stating that 'The theme directory "twentysixteen" does not exist.' This is happening because the twentysixteen theme directory has been deleted. To get the site to load, go back into the wordpress dashboard and choose another theme."
I do use the defender plugin, but I don't know the answer to your question.

    Hello Michelle

Just curious, did you install wordpress using one click installer? This is not a good idea installing wordpress using one click/automatic installer.

The wordpress database was missing a table

That means the wordpress (or multisite) was not set up correctly.

After creating a new site, you will need to click on the link to go to the dashboard. If you get a gateway timeout error, click on the reload/refresh button. The reason the timeout happens is because it is generating the entire site for the first time.

This is not right. Subsite is created instantly. When you see timeout error in first visit, then it means there is still problem in wordpress setup or there is an issue with server configuration.

The theme directory "twentysixteen" does not exist.

That's why the default theme should never be deleted. This theme also helps to test theme conflict.

I have asked you about changing table prefix because I saw you are not using default prefix and it's definitely a great idea. But if the prefix is not changed in correct way, then you may face more problems in the future.

If you didn't do so much work in your setup, then you may consider to reinstall and start over, of course in that case go with the manual installation. Besides, I have also sent a report to the defender developer to check if renaming prefix has any chance to break things (we didn't get any report about that yet though).

Hope it helps  Please feel free to ask more question if you have any.

    Cheers

So, I moved to WP Engine hosting, because they set up the multisite database for you and I could be sure I was building off a strong install.

I've spent the last three days rebuilding the site. Now there is still a delay in creating the sites, but they do eventually get created. However, they have only the default theme template, not the one I created. I've enabled support access.

    Hi Michelle,

As you have started from the scratch, I logged in with Support Access and tried to regenerate that error and it seems like the issue is still there.
Deletion Error: Table 'wp_newsfundr.nf_13_13_posts' doesn't exist - The template was not applied. (New Blog Templates - While clearing nf_13_13_posts)
So I'm pinging our developer again regarding this. I'll update you if I get anything from him.

Please keep in mind, our developers work round the clock and they have to deal with lots of critical issues and other things. So it may take a little while for them to check this and provide a feedback.

    Have a nice day. Cheers!

    Hi again Michelle

I've been playing with New Blog Templates and Defender and could not reproduce your exact issue in my development environment. I would need more access to your site for a better debugging. Would be possible to get WP Engine temporary credentials?

the new site I tried to create was allison-reilly.newsfundr.com. It looks like it was generated as test4.newsfundr.com. When I click on dashboard it brings me back to newsfundr.com, and it appears no part at all of the template is in place on the new site- not even the correct theme.

    Hey Michelle,

Sorry to know that you are still having trouble with creating new sites. Reading the last message through the emails, Ignacio did point out that the issue was related to IgnitionDeck plugin. I did follow up with an email asking to get in touch with the plugin support, since you were having issues with the fix/patch provided by IgnitionDeck plugin with Revolution slider plugin, did you get in touch with IgnitionDeck support team related to this?

What did they have to say regarding this? Is the issue with Revolution Slider fixed, and you still cannot create a new blog template?

Please provide more details regarding this, and advise what I'm missing here, so that I could check this with the developer to see what could be done here.

    Kind Regards,
    Nithin

Here's what WPEngine has to say about the problem. Is there any way to know whether this is an ID or WPMU issue? Thanks.

    Hello,

    Thanks for your patience.

After a bit of investigation, it appears the issue stems from all the additional tables that are in the database that are no longer used but for some reason the subsite tables are still in the database.

The site has been pushed to staging to test this out.

In the wp_blogs table these are the following blog IDs:

    1, 5, 10, 11, 17, 18

In the database, here are subsite tables:

    nf_10_options
    nf_11_options
    nf_12_options
    nf_13_options
    nf_14_options
    nf_15_options
    nf_16_options
    nf_17_options
    nf_18_options
    nf_21_options
    nf_22_options
    nf_29_options
    nf_2_options
    nf_30_options
    nf_33_options
    nf_34_options
    nf_3_options
    nf_4_options
    nf_5_options
    nf_6_options
    nf_7_options
    nf_8_options
    nf_9_options

To address this issue, please remove the tables that do not match wp_blogs (nf_2, nf3, nf4*, etc.).

If you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to reply.

    Hello Michelle,

Sadly there is not much details in this message (why those tables are there - are they created with attempt of creating new subsite - why new subsite is not created) that would tell us about nature of it. if possible could you ask them about that?
But there should be no harm in trying their solution - before doing anything please make sure you have backup of the database - and delete those tables. Then try to create again subsite to see if their solution worked. Let us know about the results.

    kind regards,
    Kasia
