BuddyPress – how do I make it so anybody can see the content of a group and make comments but only members can post to the group

    Hey there.

The only options for groups are:

    This is a public group

Any site member can join this group.

This group will be listed in the groups directory and in search results.

Group content and activity will be visible to any site member.

    This is a private group

Only users who request membership and are accepted can join the group.

This group will be listed in the groups directory and in search results.

Group content and activity will only be visible to members of the group.

    This is a hidden group

Only users who are invited can join the group.

This group will not be listed in the groups directory or search results.

Group content and activity will only be visible to members of the group.

    I’ve never tested but:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-groups-extras/

    http://buddypress.org/community/groups/bp-privacy/ (old)

I’m not sure if it’s possible with them but worth looking into, perhaps there might be another plugin out there which someone else knows about but if not then it would be something you’d have to custom develop unfortunately.

    Take care.

Thanks Timothy – It looks like BuddyPress has some maturing to do (A group search function would also be nice) and I need to look for another approach?

Where would I start looking for the code that controls the groups? Any idea what such a custom develop could cost?

By the way my congratulations to you guys at WPMU – you run a really good operation. Thanks for the help.

I do agree BuddyPress does have further to go here. I think they’ve done well so far but their development team is relatively small and they all do other things in addition to volunteering BP code.

Looking at the code there are a fair few references to groups and privacy in different files.

As for cost, it would depend on the developer, where they live in the world and how well sought after they are. I would imagine anything from a couple of hundred dollars to around a thousand at the most expensive.

But you know I’ve seen developers charge a fortune for the most simplest of things. So shop around and look at their reputation.

You might like to ask Tweak what they would charge:

Thanks for your kind comments as well

    Take care.
