Can I Write HTML in Simple Css

Can I write HTML in Simple Custom CSS if I use !DOCTYPE prior to the HTML?

<!DOCTYPE html>

li {

display: inline;

<p>Display a list of links as a horizontal menu:</p>

    Hello Mary,

    I assume you are using WordPress. The example you have provided will not work because those tags can only be used once on a page and are initiated within the WordPress core for each page. You can incorporate HTML into your posts and pages. Take a look at the WordPress Codex below:

    If you are trying to add a custom menu try a plugin. I have provided a couple links to articles that outline a few free ones. Be sure to test compatibility before going live.

    Kind regards,

    Hey Mary,

    I hope you’re well and thank you for your question!

    WebDoc is right about this one – you can’t use those html tag in Simple Custom CSS. I would only add to this that you actually cannot use any HTML tags in Simple Custom CSS as it’s only for CSS and CSS is not the same as HTML. In general, html is for delivering and structuring content and css is for making it look in a way you want it too look. This is of course a very general and simplified definition but the point is that each is different. The fundamental fact here is how and where html and css is outputted to the browser – in different ways. After all, you’d end-up with a broken website.

    As WebDoc suggested, it would be better to use some plugins in this case.

    Right now, I am doing a CSS Tutorial on . It cover a LOT of what I want and need to do on my WP site. (not sure why WebDoc would wonder if I’m using WP or not, since this is the Support Forum for WP, right? Though I VERY MUCH appreciated his reply.)

    Several days ago, I asked WPMU Dev Support about something I wanted to change on my site. I was told I needed to download a “Code Snippets” plugin to do that. HOWEVER, the CSS Tutorial I am doing right now is addressing what I can do in CSS, using HTML.

    So rather than use ANOTHER plugin, especially if it’s NOT a WPMU Dev created plugin, can’t I use HTML within CSS IF I use the !DOCTYPE at the beginning? The example I gave was just something out of the tutorial, not what I wanted to use HTML for that I asked WPMU Dev Support about.

    And if I CAN’T use !DOCTYPE in Simple CSS plugin, is there ANOTHER command that I can use in it to enable me to use HTML?

    Thanks TONS in advance!!

    Hello Mary,

    I hope you’re well today and I’m sorry for the delay here.

    If it comes to your question, let me please explain that you shouldn’t confuse HTML and CSS . There’s no command that would let you use HTML inside CSS (which also means that you can’t use HTML in Simple CSS plugin). Simply speaking: CSS can be used to, let’s say, “beautify” HTML output but not otherwise. HTML is not (and never was) meant to be used within CSS so there’s either no plugin nor the technique that would let you do it.

    That said, if you wish for example to change your site’s layout you should consider building a WP theme of your own (or a child theme for the beginning). That’s in fact the only way to play directly with HTML, especially if you have setting a !DOCTYPE in mind.
