Can't reach dashboard for new sites in MultiSite

I upgraded to WP 3.9 on one site, (should have known better!), and now I can "start" a new site - but can't get to it once it's been "created".

So, I put a fresh install of WP 3.9 Multi-Site on another domain - same thing there.

I've done all that is necessary with wp-config and .htaccess - I still can't reach any sites that I create. Everything seems to be working fine otherwise. AND YES - I did the Wildcard DNS things too.

Thanks in advance,
Doug

    Hi there @Doug,

Hope you're well today and thanks for your question.

Can you paste your .htaccess here please?

Also when you try to access the dashboard, do you get too many redirects, a server error or something else?

Could I have a link to create a test site please.

    Thanks!

    Kind Regards
    Jack.

    RewriteRule ^/?$ "http\:\/\/im\-tiger\.com\/" [R=301,L]

The last lines above after # END WordPress - I don't think they were there until I started messing around in phpmyadmin

    Hi there @Doug,

I'm sure we can get this resolved, if you'd like to continue using multisite?

If so, change your .htaccess to this

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]

    # add a trailing slash to /wp-admin
    RewriteRule ^wp-admin$ wp-admin/ [R=301,L]

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
    RewriteRule ^ - [L]
    RewriteRule ^(wp-(content|admin|includes).*) $1 [L]
    RewriteRule ^(.*\.php)$ wp/$1 [L]
    RewriteRule . index.php [L]

When did you add the Wlldcard A record? This can take up to 24hrs propgate, though from your original post, I presume that has been added for some time

    Thanks!

    Kind Regards
    Jack.

OK - I'm working on it again. I was angry and I deleted all the extra code in the .htaccess file and wp-config file.

I'm putting the code in those files like you explained.

On the first site - where I already had multisite functioning the Wildcard A record was propogated.

On the fresh site - (the one I gave you the url to), I had just added the Wildcard A record today - just before I started this thread.

I'll take my time - now and see if I can get it working - with your help.

But now I have the Warning: An existing Wordpress network was detected in my dashboard.

Thanks for helping. I'll try to be more patient!

OK Jack. I've added the code back again into .htacess and wp-config files. The site seems to be working great. But it seemed to be working great before too.

I'm going to "create" a test site now and see if I can get into the dashboard of it. Wish me luck!

I forgot to tell you. I put Wordpress 3.83 back on that domain.... im-tiger.com

It's still not working though. It's doing the same thing - creating sites when I want to but I can't get to them!

    Doug

PS: When I try to connect to the dashboard of the new site - I get the error message "server not found"

    Hi there @Doug,

Hope you're well today and thanks for the additional information.

I'd love to take a look at this directly if possible?

If that is possible, can you send me FTP and WP network admin please to contact(at)wpmudev.org with the subject line Attn: Jack Kitterhing

I can then further investigate

    Kind Regards
    Jack.

Hey Jack, Thanks for taking the time with my "problem". But you were RIGHT about the Wildcard A record needing to "propagate". I woke up this morning and connected with the test sites I had set up. No problem. Works beautifully. But, I am NOT going to upgrade to WP 3.9 until I know I can without a bunch of problems!

Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it!

    Doug
