Cloner brought the network down.

Hi folks,

After starting a to clone a subsite, it brought the network down.

What causes this and how can it be fixed?

I notice a huge spike in CPanel on all resources for a while too . . . but the network is still down.

See attached.

I also have the host looking into it right now.

Please let me know your thoughts. Does this happen to other with Cloner on networks? Are there bugs?

    Hey @Greg,

The cause of this can vary, I'd like to ask a few questions here:

    - Does your host have any news of their own as to the outage? I'd be curious to know what the logs say around the time that the network went down
    - As I'm presently seeing your site's home page not loading fully (I'm presently only getting the header code), could I ask you to set WP_DEBUG to true, and sharing what's coming up via pastebin.com?
    - If you were to clone a fresh site (and not one that's been around for a while), do you run into the same issue?

    Please advise,
    Michael

Please look at this for more insight with @Patrick for live chat too:
https://premium.wpmudev.org/live-support-archives/?lid=4251&chat_id=802276 (this conversation starts at 6:31 pm est my time in that thread).

I was on live chat, too, with my host for almost 2 hours asking tons of questions. I could send you the transcript if needed (which I doubt you want . . . smile). She did say their were "sleep processes" and here is a snippet of some of them:

    | 13564291 | mydatabase_lfn | localhost | mydatabase_lfn | Sleep | 1 | | |
    | 13564304 | mydatabase_lfn | localhost | mydatabase_lfn | Sleep | 0 | | |
    | 13564726 | mydatabase_lfn | localhost | mydatabase_lfn | Sleep | 0 | | |
    etc etc etc

See also the resources being taxed (they will lower and then spike again even now). See attached.

Yea, I am now getting a blank page too! But, here are past screenshots from earlier too. See attached.

No sure about the fresh site vs. pre existing. This is the first time I have run it (I was just wanting to clone one subsite to actually send to you guys for a unrelated issue . . . hahaha per your wpmudev request in another thread).

Let me know what you think . . .

    @Michael Bissett

I have not read it all yet, but this is exactly (it seems) what happened to me:
    https://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/cloners-hanging-destination-site-with-white-screen?utm_expid=3606929-52.ZpfeUjXqSWOCaoohIqoFQQ.0&utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F

I NEED to be 100% absolutely sure I do not lose my active plugins on the different subsites though and would like a bit more input from ya hopefully.

I also have noticed other threads having issues with Cloner too.

By the way, another thread spoke of naming the cloned site with a close to the same name causing issues too (but I will not put that link here for now so as to not put too much info) but I think that could be related as well. The above link, so far, seems closest to my issue.

    Let me know...

    @Michael Bissett

After ten solid hours researching and troubleshooting the problem has been solved FYI. I had to piecemeal solutions from your live chat, my host several times, this thread, researching on the net, and finally through other wpmudev threads. I think there is some more insight into this problem here too. I am too tired to go too deep now, but here is the basics:

I when to the hover over a site I wanted to clone and clicked, "clone". I think gave Cloner a name like mysubsite-development.mysite.com Note I had another subsite (the live one) called mysubsite.mysite.com In one of the threads on wpmudev, I read someone mention that Cloner will cause a white screen of death if you create a fresh clone with a similar name (he meant I think with a exact beginning portion or section being the same). This is what I did. If this is really the issue, then Cloner should have major warning and not even allow for the name to be used if it will conflict with the current database naming with any other subsite on the network. I believe that thread is here referring to that: https://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/server-crash-during-cloning-now-cant-create-site?utm_expid=3606929-52.ZpfeUjXqSWOCaoohIqoFQQ.0&utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F#post-926161

Then, I took what was said by Patrick https://premium.wpmudev.org/live-support-archives/?lid=4251&chat_id=802276 and then convinced myself to just go ahead and rename the plugins folder and hopefully get access here : https://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/cloners-hanging-destination-site-with-white-screen#post-742754 (I was reluctant to do it before).

I immediately found the GHOST or PHANTOM subsite that Cloner tried to make but did not (it did not create a sites folder in the uploads either). Then, deleted it.

Then, renamed the plugins folder as it should be.

Then, all server resouces went back to normal and alls subsites are fine now.

Now, I am scared to death to use Cloner (lol).

Could a feature request be put in to make Cloner foolproof and have warnings so that this white screen issue, errors, and general heartache/panic could be circumnavigated for future users?

Even though, I could use it again and know how to quickly fix it now that I know what goes wrong and what to do about it . . it would be very nice if that was fixed so it is not possible anymore at all for anyone.

I think subsite with the naming convention used cause some kind of database confusion loop. It just could not find anything at all. The subsite appeared in the Network admin area (if you can login delete it) but not in the WP uploads sites area too. It created some kind of rogue subsite that wreaks havock with everything and all other subsites.

Hey @Greg, my apologies for the delay here! :slight_frown:

My colleagues though weren't able to reproduce this there, but it's definitely odd that you've run into this as well. I've only got a subdirectory Multisite available to test with presently (which isn't presently running into this problem you mentioned), so it looks like we'd need to dig deeper into your network to investigate the cause of this.

You can open a feature request over here:

    https://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/forum/feature-suggestions#question

As for the digging I mentioned earlier, could you please send in the following via our secure contact form:

    - Mark to my attention, the subject line should contain only: ATTN: Michael Bissett
    - Do not include anything else in the subject line, doing so may delay our response due to how email filtering works.
    - Link back to this thread
    - Include WordPress network admin access details (login address, username & password)
    - Include FTP log-in details (hostname, username & password)
    - Include any relevant URLs for your site

On the contact form (linked to below), please select "I have a different question", this ensures it comes through and gets assigned to me.
