Cname Confusion with Domain Mapping

Hi, ok so on my hostgator account i have both domains, the main mu wp site and the site (domain) i want to redirect to my test user blog on the mu site. What i did is i created a cname on the site but it askes me to give it a name so then it saved it as blog.domainname.com and then i pointed it to my multi user site here, without the folder that the test blog site is in. I also mapped the domain i want to point to my blog in the tools>domain mapping under my test account on the mu site. Nothing happened. Then I am talking to support on the hosting account and they are telling me you can't do a cname to a subfolder... What am i to do? My goal is to be able to give my users full websites under their own domain names., WIll i be able to do that?

    Greets and welcome to wpmudev.

It would be a plus if you used specifics when asking for help. That way we can see what is occurring. blog.domainname.com doesn;t give us a whole lot to go on. With the specifics in front of us, we may see somethng about your setup that you may be missing.

You can't cname to a directory. Actually you can but a lot of DNS servers will not support it. CNames require a fully qualified domain name. As an example, you can see folks here arguing about it.

What you need to do is create an 'A' record for the domain you want mapped using the IP address of your wpmu install. Doing that, once the visitor gets to the wpmu install, the software handles it from there.

Sue/ James/ Mason/ anyone else with access: Since this came up yesterday as well, that bit about CNames should be clarified to not show if it;s a subdirectory install. Gotta admit that I would do it just as a 'A' record for the subdomain anyway. To use this example, give blog.domainname.com it;s own 'A' record.

    Hope this helps,

Hi, sorry i didn't give it any specifics, the domain I did is wpsitebuilder.net - the domain i'm trying to redirect is http://1downloadfreesoftware.com, just to test it really. Both domains are hosted at Hostgator and I created a blog on wpsitebuilder.net for mdias so that url would be http://wpsitebuilder.net/mdias but what happend was the opposite, the http://wpsitebuilder.net/mdias got redirected to the 1downloadsoftare.com site! The effect that I wanted was the exact opposite.

When I bought into the membership, I was under the impression that I could sell websites on my mu install that my customers would then be able to use as if it was their domain. Was I wrong? I had installed the network on subdomains but kept reading about people having trouble with it so I changed it to directory. What gives? WIll i need to redo everything and start from scratch to change it back to subdomains? I appreciate your help on this.

    Hiya,

When I bought into the membership, I was under the impression that I could sell websites on my mu install that my customers would then be able to use as if it was their domain. Was I wrong?

Nope. That's one of the uses of it. I created an install screencast for domain mapping awhile back that shows you how it works step-by-step. We haven't used it as the volume during recording wasn't loud enough, but if ya turn up the volume, perhaps it can help a bit:
    http://www.vimeo.com/16013476
It's 10 minutes long and shows every step.

You shouldn't have any issues regardless of subdomain or subdirectory - each method will work. If you have more specific questions, just let us know.

    Thanks!
