Converting 4 single WP installs with own URLs on one hosting server to one multi-user install

Hi,

I am with "Just Host" and they allow me to have all my domains as individual sites. (see screenshot)
eg. http://www.judiegade.com.au
http://www.musicwise.com.au
http://www.adhdconsults.com.au
http://www.teaguru.com.au
http://www.seedswap.com.au
http://www.y-gen.com.au
http://www.y-generation.com.au

In the cpanel they are all under the musicwise root domain as a subdomain:
eg. judiegade.musicwise.com.au but for all intents and purposes, they are their own URL to the public (as above)

Now I have just been told that I cannot install multi-site! My hosting is up in October and I have to launch MusicWise SOON but would like the flexibility of WP multi-user (for obvious reasons).

Any suggestions?

    Hiya!

Well there are two ways to go about this.....

Set up your new hosting with a brand new install of WordPress Multisite and use the import/export feature to move your current sites into sub-sites on your new installation.

Or you could move all your current sites as they are to new hosting and add the User Synchronisation plugin to link together the user tables.

    Cheers!

    Sorry, butting in...
Yeah, pretty much. You place the plugin in each site you want to sync. On your musicwise site you click Make this Site the Master Site and follow instructions then all the other sites you click Make this a Sub site and follow instructions...
    Here is the basic install
    To install:
    Download the plugin file
Unzip the file into a folder on your hard drive
Upload /user-sync/ folder to /wp-content/plugins/ folder on the sites you would like to sync between
Login to your admin panel for your WordPress or BuddyPress site and activate the User Synchronisztion plugin in Plugins

Here is the full installation documentation:

    Hope that helps.

It was a toss up between user-synchronization and domain-mapping plugins, I went with domain-mapping, so I am not currently using user-synchronization, but I do still have plans on using it down the line, especially if they add (this is a future request) mu sync (syncing multisites).

Around the forums, (I can't remember where I saw the topics), there are a lot of users using sync, and one user even syncing something like 10 mu installs (testing) with who knows how many sub sites. So if it can handle that, I have no doubt it will be able to handle a hand full of sites, which is was created to do  I would say the biggest issue will be your sever, ram, cpu etc. If your server Prrrrr's then, I'm sure the plugin will too.

In case you ask, I went the domain-mapping route because I wanted to maintain one install. And have a network of users synced across multiple separate sites.

I didn't use the subdomain.mysite.com option, I use the folders option (your host will allow this) to achieve
    mysite.com/example_com/ --> example.com
    mysite.com/someother_com/ -->someother.com
    mysite.com/membership1/
    mysite.com/membership2/
this way I can create additional membership areas on my primary site.

If your host doesn't allow mu, then you must be on shared hosting, and if you are going to be dealing with lots and lots of hits to your websites, then your server might crash - I would investigate how much power your server has, how much dedicated RAM, CPU you have at your disposal.
Remember each page visit on wordpress equals +/-23mb memory. 10 concurrent users equals 230mb memory.

The problem is, with the site I am building, is that I KNOW it is going to have a stack of hits and memberships. Not talking 100's ... I am talking 1000's. if not 10's of thousands in the initial stages.

I am using Facebook to build networks to promote the site - the business is already getting well known. I have the best entertainment PR agent to launch it as a favour PLUS a news distribution service to do the same ... plus I am a pretty good journo myself who could not think inside a square of you paid me ... pretty creative at getting the word out!

So I need something that will cope with the membership (free) signups AND 100's of Buddypress users. I am a bit confused about the difference between Buddypress and Memberships too.
