Correct order sequence for MU, Domain mapping and Cloner

I am creating my 2nd MU and I wanted to be sure of the order to do things.

My MU will be all https so I am setting it up that way from the start with a wildcard ssl.

Secondly I will be creating subdomains that will need domain mapping to their correct tld.

I will need to clone the main site to all the subsites. I read somewhere that cloner can not clone the main site... Is that correct? If so I can work around that.

Is domain mapping going to be a problem with the site being all https? If so I may need to just secure my checkout and cart pages

So with all things considered what is the correct order to do domain mapping and cloner...Which is first and then second?

Thank you for your input,

    Hey Bob,

Hope your day is going well and thanks for your question!

You will want to clone the site THEN map it.

Since version 1.2 of Cloner you actually CAN map the main site now  just keep in mind that allowing that meant the user has to deselect the network only tables. Most of these will look like wp_network. Any other tables you know to be network only maybe from plugins etc. should be unselected as well because they will likely be quite large.

If your site is all https then your domain mapped sites won't be; however, the latest update is working on allowing you to force the original domain on the front end for certain pages which will allow it to be https.

The only other way to do this is to have a multi-domain SSL too, which allows you to have https on mapped domains without forcing back to the original domain.

Hopefully that all makes sense! Let me know if you have any further questions here

    Look forward to hearing back.

    All the best,

    Hey Bob,

Thanks for getting back to me here

So do not clone wp_network and don't clone network admin specific plugins..Is that it?

Yes. You might want to do a practice clone first, just clone the main site to a subsite then test it out and make sure it works correctly, if so, then you're good to go to keep cloning the main site with the same settings.

This MU will be all ecommerce sites so I need SSL. Will I need a main domain SSL in addtiion to the Wildcard SSL.?

The Wildcard SSL includes SSL for the main domain, so you don't need a single main one.

I spoke to the developer on this matter and you should be able to force original domain for SSL, You should link to it though.

For example, make your checkout link, link to

If you wanted to get SSL on your mapping domain. ie. then you would need to get a multi-domain cert(if you want it for several mapped domains) which can get pretty pricey.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you still have further questions.

    All the best,

PS. The /wp-content/plugins/domain-mapping/domain-mapping.php file has some documentation that you might be interested in reading for the functions that handle getting links with original domains.
