Creating Sidebars and Identifying Page Types

I want to create a custom page that is a clone of the basic Blog and News page, but one that loads a different sidebar depending on the type of post (in this instance a Q&A plugin post). Looking at sidebar.php, I see the following:

<?php if( bp_is_blog_page() || is_front_page() || !bp_current_component()) { ?>
<?php if ( !function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') || !dynamic_sidebar(__('blog-sidebar', TEMPLATE_DOMAIN)) )

It appears that the page type determines which sidebar is loaded. My question is how does BP determine if a page is a blog page, the home page, or some other page? I'd like to have a page identified as a questions page and have it use a different sidebar than the basic blog or single.php page.
