    Hello cornelius_butler

I hope you're doing fine today!

Yes, Defender will flag php.ini file and that's an expected behavior. It's always important to check the reason for flagging a file which, in this case, is that the file is not a WordPress core file.

This means that the "php.ini" file does not belong to WordPress, therefore it's reported because Defender does not know if it's there on purpose or not. It doesn't know and have no way of knowing if it was you or your host who put it there or somebody else. The php.ini file in a root folder of the install is perfectly fine as it's the PHP configuration file (so a special file to tweak server configuration). It's just not something that WordPress would add on its own.

    You can safely ignore it.
