Does Domain Mapping affect SEO

Hi,

Does Domain Mapping affect SEO and what domain will be indexed? The mapped or the original domain?

Kind regards

    Hello Marco,

Google will index mapped domain not original one. In that way, yes it will affect SEO - if your mapped domain is new, never indexed, and before that subsite was gaining from original domain (your main site is well indexed, it has good SEO) it will lost all that "power".
It works also in opposite way - sometimes main site can gain from very strong subsite - if subsite gets own domain, then main site will loose on that.
There should be no other SEO changes after domain mapping.

    kind regards,
    Kasia

Thanks, is it also possible to show content from the main site in the subsite? We chose not for the subdomain but for the domain.com/subsite solution.
I noticed that the database rows have been marked as _2 for the subsite. We would like to use some centrally stored content in multiple sites, for example store info which is the same for all country TLD's for this client.
So the client doesn't want to change static info for the mainsite for the Netherlands and again for Belgium and Germany for example. He wants to save time by having to update content only one time.

    Thanks

    Hello Marco,

This is not possible out of the box - you can check if this plugin will be helpfull https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/multisite-content-copier/#product-usage - it allows you to copy content (posts, pages, custom post types) between subsites in your network.

There are also plugins https://wordpress.org/plugins/content-mirror/ and https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-multisite-mirror/ they both outdated but second one has still active support.

    kind regards,
    Kasia

Kasia Swiderska - Regarding your comments above - Would a subsite with a mapped domain help the main site's SEO if the mapped domain has lots of indexed content and links pointing back to the main site? I'm thinking of a situation in which several independent bloggers w/ mapped domains on a MU install have links pointing back to the main site. The more bloggers you add, the more backlinks and content that could help your platform rise the SERPs.

    Hi Chris,

Hope you are doing good today.

When mapped each subsites will be treated as a new site, so all the basic SEO rules will be the same for every website, which also includes back links, and if implemented correctly, inbound links should help with results page.

    Hi Pawan Kumar,

Domain Mapping doesn't *hide* URL. It literally loads all assets from the mapped domain unless there is any hardcoded link. So if you map "sub.abc.com" with "xyz.com", then "xyz.com" assets will load like "xyz.com/wp-includes/js/wp-emoji-release.min.js?ver=4.8.1" (<- this is just an example).

So you won't need to worry about link masking or cloaking with Domain Mapping

    Have a nice day. Cheers!
