domain mapping

Is the domain mapping plugin the only way to get my users to be able to use the same account login wherever they are on the WPMU ecosystem? I'm experiencing the following problem (which I thought WPMU had working right out of a fresh install):

If I sign up as a new user and create a new blog at a new subdomain it works. But as soon as I visit that subdomain, I am no longer recognized as that user. However, if I login it takes me back to the parent domain where I am, of course, recognized as being already logged in. Which is to say, I can't log in to my subdomain.

Any ideas?

    Can you check your wp-config.php file? There are a couple of settings wpmu adds by default to it that you need to comment out for domain mapping to work.

    Namely:
    define('DOMAIN_CURRENT_SITE', 'dev.site' );
    define('PATH_CURRENT_SITE', '/' );
    define('BLOGID_CURRENT_SITE', '1' );

    Also, look out for COOKIE_DOMAIN.

    Comment these out (put // in front of each line) and see if that makes a difference.

    I am seeing this error when I visit the Home page of a mapped domain;

    "Template Error: The template file must be given (or the template could not be opened)"

    http://wenxindental.com (mapped domain) redirects to @ http://wenxindental.com/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi (error page).

    I edited wp-config.php as per this post...

    Changed;

    /* Multisite */
    define('MULTISITE', true);
    define('SUBDOMAIN_INSTALL', true);
    define('DOMAIN_CURRENT_SITE', 'trinitytranslation.com');
    define('PATH_CURRENT_SITE', '/');
    define('SITE_ID_CURRENT_SITE', 1);
    define('BLOG_ID_CURRENT_SITE', 1);

    to

    /* Multisite */
    define('MULTISITE', true);
    define('SUBDOMAIN_INSTALL', true);
    // define('DOMAIN_CURRENT_SITE', 'trinitytranslation.com');
    // define('PATH_CURRENT_SITE', '/');
    // define('SITE_ID_CURRENT_SITE', 1);
    // define('BLOG_ID_CURRENT_SITE', 1);

    However this has not resolved the issue....
