Domain Mapping Using IP in lieu of Domain Name

We are moving the client to a new host.

Prior to moving we are adding new sites.

The URL will stay the same and is still pointed at the live sites.

When I try to substitute the IP address of the new server account for the domain name in Domain mapping, we get a site not found error message.

For example, http://residenceriverbend.162.214.0.35/ yields the error whereas http://residenceriverbend.com is a live site.

I have set up the host account with a wildcard sub-domain.

I suspect that since the DNS pointers are not pointing to the server, things may not resolve properly.

What would be the correct method for adding new sub-domain sites while in this development posture?

Thank you.

    Hi John,

    Hope you’re well?

Unfortunately, you can’t use it like that, until the DNS has propogated properly to the new servers IP address, the domains will be unusable, to use the sites in the meantime & to add new sites, you will need to disable the domain mapping on those sites and use the standard wordpress sub-domains/folders to access those sites, basicly as though they don’t have mapped domains.

    Hope this helps

    Hi John,

You can yes, as long as you have some kind of Domain resolver on your network to resolve a local domain to it’s network internal IP address. you can do that with BIND on linux, but i’m not sure of exactly how you set it up as it’s not something i’ve done before. it’s certainly possible though.

so on your own PC, maybe possibly you could still use the domain domain.com then in your hosts /vhosts file you would bind domain.com to your computers internal IP address such as 192.168.1.20

    Hope this helps
