Drop of performance after https

Hi best Support Team ever,

I am really desperate since our musikzentrale.net website experienced a dramatic drop in THE HUB performance points, from 84 to 59 by now. I am still using WP Rocket as caching and performance plugin, but maybe my site could do so much better when using only plugins from a single company?

Anyway, could you please assist me in getting back to our pretty good shape before the switch to SSL? Thanks in advance,

cheers, Sebastian

    Hello Sebastian,

Using plugins from one company don't have influence on site speed.

How did you switch to SSL? Because google reports that you have 2 redirects from http to https and then https + www

Another issues that google page speed test shows are images that are resized with CSS to fit smaller containers

Unfortunately this is not something our Smush can deal with since the theme code is written in the way to call the larger image, and even though the image is compressed google doesn't like loading image larger than its holder, so this is soomething you need to check with the theme devs.

Other issues showed by google page speed test you should be able to fix using Hummingbird plugin https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/wp-hummingbird/

    kind regards,
    Kasia

Oh ha, am I running into trouble because of our desire to get more security with SSL? I switched to SSL using the Real Simple SSL Plugin, seem to do a great job, but i am not a pro. How can i avoid the double redirect? Is it because i set up https:// with and without www in the webmaster Tools?

Should i skip WP Rocket and use Hummingbird instead? or can i use both along the same time?

You see, I really need some assistance  Thank you so much for that.

    Have a great evening, Sebastian

Okay, I was in boyscout mode and skipped WP Rocket, installed Hummingbird instead and started into a brand new compressing and caching part of our websites live.

Everything worked fine so far, configuring is pretty self explaining and sort of fun, due to great explanations and the beautiful interface of all new WPMU Plugins. Applause for that!

Strange things, nothing to worry, but remarkable at least: Pingdom indicates a plus for loading time of 2 seconds, but Perfomance Grade is getting much better from mid 70s to high80s or even mid `90 (first time we got an A).

Google page speed does not show any dramtatic changes, mobil version drops by 10 point, depending on the time, desktop version is fairly stable at 65-70%.

Only thing that obviously needs fixing, since Hub, Google and pingdom all call it first priority, is gzip/deflate compression.

Hub reports: "Enable compression for the following resources to reduce their transfer size by 284.8KiB (86% reduction). Compressing https://www.musikzentrale.net/ could save 284.8KiB (86% reduction)." -
Hummingbird says: "gzip is not working properly:
    - Your server may not have the "deflate" module enabled (mod_deflate for Apache, ngx_http_gzip_module for NGINX)
    - Another plugin may be interfering with the configuration
If re-checking and restarting does not resolve, please check with your host or open a support ticket with us."

I am a little lost, so your kind assistance is highly appreciated.

    Cheers, Sebastian.

    Hello Sebastian !

It means most likely your server is not configured to support .gzip compression. There may be some other reasons but this is most likely. I'd suggest contacting your host first and asking them to confirm whether the "mod_deflate" (if it's Apache) or "ngx_https_gzipm_module" (if it's NGINX) is enabled and configured on your server.

If it's not, please ask them if they could enable it for you. Hopefully, they will and this should solve the issue.

In case they confirmed that it's already enabled, plugin conflict test would be better. So please take down if so by following flowchart stated in our this support manual.

Please let me know how it goes.

    Best regards,
    Ivan.
