e-newsletters send in background

Hi,
e-newsletter is going great!! but takes sometime to run through a modest sized list (few hundred). When it says run in background by cron, does that mean it triggers to send x amount a specific intervals? I read on a post that it is fine if your site has good traffic. Im needing to get the emails all delivered regardless of front end traffic, but the site owner needs to hit send and walk away, rather than waiting for significant time for the script to complete. Will the run in background still deliver all fine, but allow him to close his browser?

Thanks
Mike

    Hello @Mike

    Welcome to WPMU community!

I hope you are well today and thanks for asking the question.

but the site owner needs to hit send and walk away, rather than waiting for significant time for the script to complete. Will the run in background still deliver all fine, but allow him to close his browser?

This is exactly the reason of running in background

The newsletter will be sent on cron, and yes it will send X amount in certain interval. But note that, as this process run on cron job so you will need a good number of visitors in your site. Also note that, this cron is not your server cron, rather this is wordpress croon which depends on the traffic in your site. If you have low number of visitors, then it may not the right choice. But if you have good visitors, then you can go with it.

Hope it helps  Please feel free to ask more question if you have any.

    Cheers

    Thanks Ash,
Thought it might be triggered to send x when page loads. Thanks so much for clarifying. Perhaps that might work in conjunction with an external ping. I note there is ability for limiting numbers sent per hour, so not to blow out server rules on how many emails per hour they might allow. Maybe sending out via Mandrill or the like might be a solution there. But do we know how many emails get batched per visit by default, when using the background method?
Thanks again. Your support is exceptional

    Hello @bizetools

But do we know how many emails get batched per visit by default, when using the background method?

Nope, unfortunately we don't know that. In some visit, there won't be no email sent and in some visit lots of email will be sent. We don't have any idea on this. It depends on the server load, cron queue etc.

Also, you don't need mandrill here, the e-newsletter plugin has SMTP settings integrated. And if you enable cron, you can set how many emails should be sent in what interval.

Hope it helps  Please feel free to ask more question if you have any.
