Events + Plug-In Doesn't Appear to Be Working Properly

Hi Ash,

As you can see the site has gone live! (http://blackmothersunited.org) Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the plug-in Events+ to work properly. I deleted all of the previous events that I created and we discussed earlier, and emptied the trash; then created a new recurring event called Support Group Meeting. Initially, it seemed to work. It was accessible through the calendar widget located on the http://blackmothersunited.org/calendar page and was appearing properly on the http://blackmothersunited.org/event-details/2015/07/support-group-meetings-0/

But now it doesn't. Here's what's happening. I really need your help since now that the site is live is supposed to be announced to the public 8/1. But these bugs need to be worked out.

1. After I create an event and click update, the system briefly shows a URL that says "view event" then quickly reverts to Post Updated. View Post.
2. Author Drop down doesn't list all of the Users (I created BMU Events Manager with Author privileges and it doesn't show up in the list.)
3. I created a Page using Upfront titled http://blackmothersunited.org/calendar. I inserted the Events+ widget which appears to work. When I click on the date 7/13, the system opens clickable text describing the event. When I click on the text it takes me to http://blackmothersunited.org/event-details/2015/07/support-group-meetings-0/, but the information about the event does not display. However, as shared above, it did appear initially and I styled the page so that it would look like the http://blackmothersunited.org/calendar page.
4. When I enter the address http://blackmothersunited.org/event-details, the Event+ plug-in's Calendar template displays without any site styling. If I don't use the Calendar template, the http://blackmothersunited.org/event-details/2015/07/support-group-meetings-0/ page doesn't display at all.

I've read through all the Events+ documentation and viewed the video created in 2012. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLGiE38X8E0) So, I'm at a total loss as to what's going wrong. I'm not using any add-ons or exotic plug-ins that I know of that would create issues with Events+

I've provided access to the site, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
Kimberly

    Hi @Kimberly Cohen!

Ash is currently offline right now. I'll try my very best to help you out here and thanks for the detailed questions and for enabling support access!

    1. After I create an event and click update, the system briefly shows a URL that says "view event" then quickly reverts to Post Updated. View Post.

I tried this on your site, and didn't see anything wrong with it. Please see attached animated file (event-test.gif). Please advise me if I misunderstood something in here.

    2. Author Drop down doesn't list all of the Users (I created BMU Events Manager with Author privileges and it doesn't show up in the list.)

Could you try deleting BMU Events Manager user and try creating it again? I tried creating a test user with Author privileges and it shows up in the list.

    3. Followed your steps in here and I can see the event details when clicking the text from the calendar. Let me know if there's still something wrong in here.

    4. What styling do you need for this page http://blackmothersunited.org/event-details/ ? Maybe I can help with some CSS.

    Looking forward to your response.

    Cheers,
    Aicee

    Hi Aicee,
Thank you for stepping in for Ash. I was able to create a User called Events Manager but not one titled BMU Events Manager, which I find to be very strange, but at least I have another User available on the Author list for Events.

I created another event I named Test 2 and am experiencing the same problems. I've attached a PDF with screen prints for you to review. There are a few things that are different between the event you created and the ones I created. Perhaps these differences are causing the problems.

    1) An image is embedded in the event.
    2) The event is recurring.
    3) Short code for the Google Map is embedded.

Can you try to create another event incorporating the above attributes to see what results you get? In addition, can you determine why the events I've created and try to view from their respective locations on the dashboard end up activating the blog (Let's Talk) page?

I look forward to hearing from you soon again.

    Sincerely,
    Kimberly

    Hi Kimberly!

    1) Thanks for the details! I've missed that recurring event part. Yes, permalink won't be displayed on a recurring event. But you can see it by clicking Edit instances, found at the right sidebar, and just click on a specific date. Please see attached animation file.

    2) I tried checking the link again from http://blackmothersunited.org/calendar/ and it's working fine on my side. I can see the event details. I'm using Chrome. May I know which browser are you using? Please also check the attached .gif file for this.

    3) For the template issue, Event+ creates a virtual page events which is on your site http://blackmothersunited.org/events-details. To change its code/content you have to overwrite its template file archive-incsub_event.php in your child theme. If you want to achieve the same style as the one on your /calendar, then just create another page, then use the same process you've used on your /calendar page. I believe it's a Calendar Upcoming widget. Make that the /events-details/ page and just change the slug of the previous one from Events+ > Settings.

Let me know if you have more questions.

    Cheers,
    Aicee

    Hi Aicee,
Thank you for all the sleuthing you've been doing on my behalf and for the animated files. It's good to know that I'm not going crazy when it comes to not seeing the permalink on the input screen (dashboard) for a recurring event unless I click Edit instances. Unfortunately, I'm still having the same issue with not being able to see the Event Details of an event once I click on a link to a particular event from the http://blackmothersunited.org/calendar page (e.g. http://blackmothersunited.org/event-details/2015/09/test-2-1/). I've tried every browser I have installed on my machine - i.e.. Foxfire, Safari, Chrome and IE, and I've even tested it on my husband's Mac but the event will not display.

What on earth could be going on? Please help!

    Kimberly

    Hi Aicee,
Just to give you a bit more detail regarding the above reply....I've attached a PDF that contains more screen shots.

What I've found is that when I click "View" within the Events listing in the dashboard, the event will display on the Event Details page. However, when I click a link to an event from the http://blackmothersunited.org/calendar page (e.g., http://blackmothersunited.org/event-details/2015/08/support-group-meetings-1/) the event does not display on the Event Details page with one exception and that's the test event you created (i.e., http://blackmothersunited.org/event-details/2015/07/test-event-2015/).

Again, I'm not sure why this is happening. The only differences as I shared last night are:
    1. mine are recurring events
    2. mine have images in them

Are there add-ons I'm supposed to activate in order to make this all work?

I look forward to your response.
    Sincerely,
    Kimberly

    Hi Aicee,

That worked!!!! Hurray!!! Thank you so much!! I think it's an odd way for the plug-in to work, but ...I'm thrilled you found the answer.

I have a question about your previous instructions:
"For the template issue, Event+ creates a virtual page events which is on your site http://blackmothersunited.org/events-details. To change its code/content you have to overwrite its template file archive-incsub_event.php in your child theme. If you want to achieve the same style as the one on your /calendar, then just create another page, then use the same process you've used on your /calendar page. I believe it's a Calendar Upcoming widget. Make that the /events-details/ page and just change the slug of the previous one from Events+ > Settings."

When I created the /calendar page I used the widget, Calendar Upcoming. As you can see, it doesn't look like the plug-in's calendar template that is displayed via http://blackmothersunited/event-details, but it will do for now.

In addition, when a user clicks on an event from the /calendar page, the page that displays is titled Event Details and it has the same styling as the site. I was able to accomplish this when the first event was created and I went to view it. The system generated a page that wasn't styled and I proceeded to style it using Upfront. As I was doing this, the system appeared to treat the page as a post because as I saved my work, it prompted me as to whether or not I wanted to save the changes I'd made for "all such occurrences". Of course, I responded with a "yes".

However, when I click on the month displayed for the event on the page that is rendered when the event link is clicked from the /calendar page, the system takes me back to the plug-in's calendar template (http://blackmothersunited.org/event-details) rather than to the calendar page (http://blackmothersunited.org/calendar. What do I need to do to change this?

I've attached a PDF for you with screen shots.

I look forward to hearing from you as to how to continue to resolve the display issues with the plug-in.

Thanks again for all your help!
    Sincerely,
    Kimberly

    Hi Kimberly!

Thank you for your detailed screenshots/pdf files!

http://blackmothersunited.org/events-details is where you can find your events archive. The default format is yoursite.com/events, but of course, you can change it, and you did with 'events-details'. So if you click links for the months, you will be sent to the events archive, which is /events-details. I'll ask the developer if there's an easy way to link it back to your /calendar page.

I'll get back to you asap once I got a response.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    Cheers,
    Aicee

    Hi Aicee,
As always, thank you so much for your help! It would be terrific if the developer could find a quick fix for that and perhaps added it into the Events+ plug-in for others to enjoy.

I have one other quick display question for you....I did not select RSVP, yet each event displays "No - Maybe - I'm Attending". If the individual selects "I'm Attending" a pop-up screen appears prompting the individual to sign-in (see att'd PDF with screen shots). My client doesn't want that at this time and I'd thought I'd made the correct selections when clicking off the boxes in the plug-in. Can you help?

I'll be looking forward to hearing from you.

    Sincerely,
    Kimberly

    Hi Aicee,

I thought by activating the Public Service Announcement plug-in that I might have found a solution for not having No-Maybe-I'm Attending selections appear in the event details. Unfortunately, after I installed the plug-in, opened the Support Group Meetings event and clicked the box to indicate it was a Public Service Announcement, the system duplicated the event, but did not list it as another entry in the Events listing or as a Post. When I went to the /calendar page, and clicked August 10, two events appeared. Regardless of which one I clicked, I was taken to a Blog template page which listed all the current blogs created, but the image on the page was that of the Spirit Theme's Blog template image not the one I've created for the blog pages which I've titled Let's Talk.

Even after I unchecked the Public Service Announcement box in the Support Group Meetings' dashboard, I couldn't get the duplicates to disappear or the Event Details page, which I'd created earlier as you know, to display. So....I deactivated the Public Service Announcement plug-in, deleted all of the events that had been previously created and emptied the trash. Then I re-created all the Support Group Meetings and re-published them. Everything is working as it did before; however, when I re-created the Support Group Meetings, I also had to re-create their landing page (which the system treats as a post page). This time I used a different image from the one that's on the /calendar page so visitors would know they were on a different page but the event was related to the /calendar page. (see PDF)

Since I still need to be able to turn off the selections No-Maybe-I'm Attending. I thought by selecting "closed" to more attendees, the event would still display on the page but just wouldn't allow anymore visitors to see the selections. Of course, I was wrong because the entire event then would not display at all.

So....as you can see I'm trying my best to figure out how to do these things on my own, but I've come to an impasse and could really use your help again.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Sincerely,
    Kimberly

    Hi Aicee,

Just checking in to see if you were able to help resolve the following issues:
    1. Is there a way to eliminate the options No-Maybe-I'm Attending from appearing in the event? If the individual selects "I'm Attending" a pop-up screen appears prompting the individual to sign-in (see previously att'd PDF with screen shots). My client doesn't want that at this time. I tried using the Public Announcement Plug-in but that resulted in duplicate event entries and no event details displaying on the Let's Talk (blog) page that the system directs me to when I click the event link from the /calendar page. I ended up deleting it, all the events I'd set-up and starting over.
    2. Have you received an answer yet from the plug-in developer as to how I can get the system to return to the /calendar page rather than the plug-in's calendar template (http://blackmothersunited.org/event-details) when I click on the month displayed for the event on the page that is rendered when the event link is clicked from the /calendar page?

I look forward to hearing from you!
    Sincerely,
    Kimberly

    Hello @Kimberly Cohen

I hope you are well today.

I am jumping here to Aicee as she is no longer working with us.

Hey, it's a pretty big thread.

Is there a way to eliminate the options No-Maybe-I'm Attending from appearing in the event?

Do you want a single button only like "Join now"? Or no button at all? But either of these is possible.

If the individual selects "I'm Attending" a pop-up screen appears prompting the individual to sign-in

Well, singing in is required to join in an event. You can enable RSVP with email address, but it will still create an user for the visitor, as without an user we can't track the RSVP members.

And if you don't mind, would you please explain the detail again? Sorry, I am messed up with this big thread and don't realize which PDF I should check :slight_frown:

Also, if you please enable support access, would be very helpful for me

    Cheers
    Ash

    Hi Ash,

Thank you so much for your email. Because I'd not heard from Aicee for a while, I thought something might be happening behind the scenes so I initiated two other requests - one for each outstanding issue. As a result, the No-Maybe-I'm Attending buttons issue has been addressed and resolved. And, the request to obtain a way to direct visitors back to the /calendar page when the month link displayed in the event details is clicked is currently being worked on by Anang.

I'm sorry that Aicee is no longer with WPMU Dev. She was great to work with as are you and the other members of your team.

    Sincerely,
    Kimberly
