File compression, htaccess, internet explorer...

Hi,
I am wondering if anyone has or knows how best to handle file compression (gzip, zlib etc.)

I have been reading here and there and its all getting abit jumbled up...
I have tried using both gzip and zlib above the DOCTYPE in the header.php files and this works fine except for Internet Explorer
Also doing this doesn't compress all files. I am thinking that I could do it via the root htaccess file and configure it to not compress for IE users, but I could do with some tips on how to write the instructions for the htaccess.
There are lots of articles around but...

I am using WP super cache on a multisite install.

Any tips?
