Getting Membership to update the level after payment

Membership payment integration works, but doesn't assign the level the client paid for after PayPal completion.
I've seen other messages on the board, and they all seem to require your direct intervention.
Please let me know how to proceed.

    Do you see any error messages on-screen? Or are there any related error messages in your error log?

    In the transactions list of your active gateways, do you see the transactions listed in the Recent, Pending or Future transaction lists?

    Thanks for the response.

    The transactions go through correctly, the PayPal gateway correctly cashes the money, and directs back. The gateway shows the payment in the recent transactions list.

    The level, however, doesn't change when the user is brought back to the site. It stays on "visitor".
    Check that. I think this might be the problem. It's empty. It's not on "Visitors". Not sure why.

    As far as I can tell, IPN is configured correctly.
    Is there a way to tell from the Wordpress side?
    Would you like to have some kind of access to the site?

    You mention an error log. Is Membership putting out a log somewhere?
