Help to find my way

Hi WPMUDEV TEAM,

First thank you for great services!!

We are a small, but experienced web design company, and we have some questions we hope you can help us with.

We are moving from a pay per project based service to a subscription based service where clients "rents" the site and services rather than paying a large one time purchase.

We want to offer this service to small companies that need a web presence, but don't have the funds to invest in a expensive website.

We want to use multisite to do this.

we go for a subdomain install - with the possibility to map a custom domain.

1. can you point us to the best articles that will teach us how to do this (we have read a few already, but is a bit lost in the jungle of great articles - which is a "good" problem:slight_smile: )

2. We have our custom starter theme with our custom framework that we have used for all clients sites on a one install per site until now. How do we make this theme / strategy work so that we can use this starter theme in a network.

The starter theme includes Boostrap and several javascript libraries that we have come to love. On top of that we develop a theme for each site. However we are a bit confused how to make use of it in a network where each site does not have its own Theme folder.. Are there any good advice you can share with us?

Thank you!

    Hello Jaidev,

we go for a subdomain install - with the possibility to map a custom domain.

When it comes to domain mapping then I can recommend usage page for our Domain Mapping plugin where there is instruction on how to map domains to subsites in network and what are requirements for server to have Domain Mapping work
    https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/domain-mapping/#product-usage

However we are a bit confused how to make use of it in a network where each site does not have its own Theme folder.. Are there any good advice you can share with us?

Yes, when you make theme Network enabled it becomes available to use for all the sites in Multisite. When you develop custom theme for site and you don't want to this theme to be used on other sites you don't Network enable it. Instead in Network admin panel go to All sites list and click "Edit" on particular site. You will see options for this site - and there will be Themes tab. In that tab you will see themes not Network enabled. So you will activate there this one custom theme for that site and it will be only visible in themes on that site, not other sites.

Let me know if you have more questions.

    kind regards,
    Kasia

Hi Jaidev, hope you had a wonderful day.

    1. would it be a good idea to have the starter theme for the network and use child themes (children of the starter theme) for the individual sites?

I think it will be a good idea to have your started theme for the network so all sites can access the core files and then activating child themes for individual sites.

    2. Will the parent theme need to be network enabled?

Yes, because child theme use theme core files from the parent theme. If the parent theme is not network enabled, then child themes can't access those files.

Please let us know if you have any further confusion. We will be glad to help.

    Have a nice day. Cheers!
