How do you incorporate your Favicon using Upfront?

I followed the instructions here:
adding the line of code to the header, but was met with the white screen of death on the front end.

Any tips for getting the favicon up there?

Thank you

    You can set a favicon by uploading your favicon.ico into the upfront directory: /wp-content/themes/upfront/
    (It's also a good idea to upload it into your root folder)

    Than open the file header.php and add the below line:
    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="<?php echo get_stylesheet_directory_uri(); ?>/favicon.ico" />

    So you get:

    <!DOCTYPE html>
    <!--[if IE 7]>
    <html class="ie ie7" <?php language_attributes(); ?>>
    <!--[if IE 8]>
    <html class="ie ie8" <?php language_attributes(); ?>>
    <!--[if !(IE 7) | !(IE 8)  ]><!-->
    <html <?php language_attributes(); ?>>
    	<meta charset="<?php bloginfo( 'charset' ); ?>" />
    	<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width" />
    	<link rel="profile" href="" />
    	<link rel="pingback" href="<?php bloginfo('pingback_url'); ?>" />
    	<link rel="shortcut icon" href="<?php echo get_stylesheet_directory_uri(); ?>/favicon.ico" />
    	<?php wp_head(); ?>
    <body <?php body_class(); ?>>
    	<div id="page" class="hfeed site clearfix">

    And than you have to remember that eacht time the theme gets updated you have to make the above changes again.
