How to move Database - multisite installation

just a quick question - hope its a quick answer :slight_smile:

I need to move the database my wpmu install uses to a new host

note: this is only a database move, and do not need to move the files

is this as simple as complete a full db backup - mysql dump
then restore the dump in the new db
update the wpmu config file to reflect the change?

any suggestions or pointers to procedure would be greatly appreciated

    Hiya Steve,

    If you have access to SSH you could use a command like this:

    $ mysqldump -u old_db_user -p'magicword' old_database | ssh root@ mysql -u root -p'magicword' newdatabase

    Obviously replace the names, usernames and passwords as required.

    Otherwise, if you have phpMyAdmin you can use the export and import features to easily move from one server to another. This will be subject to any upload file size limits in place though.

    cheers, Phil

    funny, my host doesn't provide remote access to the db - well not by default - the reason for moving it

    so i'm quite familiar with phpadmin.....

    thanks for the tip. regarding limitations on file size - will check this before the move

    site is still at an infant stage so it should be manageable here

    anyhow, fingers cross
    if you don't see me here for a few months its only because it didn't work and I have gone walkabout.......
