[Hummingbird] Optimizing images not very effective...

We ran a performance test on several of our websites and noticed we had a very low score with the image optimization of certain websites: bettybogaers.com, coverjunkie.nl, come2life.nl and freshpeople.nl when we tried to improve our score it seemed to have no effect. The images were already supersmushed and we tried resizing them but all scores remain the same. Could you help us?

    Hello Laura Lisa

    Hope you're doing well!

Regarding the http://www.bettybogaers.com site, under "Resize my full size images" please add suggest dimensions at 1024px wide × 1024px high. For the images that are required to be compressed and resized, these images are showing up on the front end in a smaller scale.

For example, an image named ..BONJOUR-PARIS-BRACELET-...-300x300.jpg, it's dimensions are 300x300px, while on the front end it is forced to be shown with 90x90px. This is why Google Page Rank returning that image could be compressed and resized. On the front end, if an image is shown in 90x90px, please upload there an image with exact same dimensions. Same goes for the rest of the images.

Regarding the image BB-Banners-ON-TOUR-BREDA3.1.jpg that is loading on the front end it is not the same image that is optimized in the Media library. Please replace it with the optimize image that has a URL /../BB-Banners-ON-TOUR-BREDA3.1-e1537784576911.jpg.

Please make sure this is not the same case for come2life.nl domain name. If it is hard to locate images that need to be compressed on the front end, please grant access to your site from WPMU DEV > Support so we could have a closer look.

I could not access your second site coverjunkie.nl to check the images. Looks like a domain you've provided is not right.

Let us know how it went!

    Kind regards,
    Nastia

    Hello there Laura Lisa,

hope you're doing good today and don't mind me chiming in!

I used Google Pagespeed Insights and I got these results:

Compressing and resizing about the following images in Media library:
    /wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Schermafbeelding-2018-09-20-om-23.28.20-250x312.png
    /wp-content/uploads/2018/09/IMG_8171-250x444.png
    /wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Schermafbeelding-2018-09-20-om-23.18.00-250x309.png
These three seem to use a "250xXXX" thumbnail, so make sure that it's enabled in Smush settings and smush them again, if not already.
Also, they should resized to a smaller version, as it seems that they got scaled down with CSS.
For resizing images, please refer to the following article in our blog:
    https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/compress-resize-images-wordpress/

Compressing and resizing about the following files outside of Media library:
    /wp-content/themes/lauralisa/img/coverjunkie_zwartpoppetjelogo.gif
    /wp-content/themes/lauralisa/img/coverjunkie_poppetjelogo.gif
You should use Directory Smush for those, as they are located outside of Media Library.
Keep in mind that if you update this theme in future though, you should re-smush these files as they will be replaced again.
Again resizing is reported though, so you should check the container where these are getting loaded and resize the file.

Compressing about the following images outside of Media library:
    /wp-content/themes/lauralisa/img/logo2.jpg
A Directory Smush should be enough for this one (keep in mind that future update of theme, will restore this).

Hope that was some help! If you still require assistance on this, please grant temporary support access via WPMUDEV Dashboard plugin (no need to share any WP admin credentials). Just navigate in WP admin area under WPMU DEV -> Support page and click on the "grant support access" button. You can find detailed information about it here: https://premium.wpmudev.org/docs/getting-started/getting-support/#chapter-5
Please do reply back here when access is granted because we don't get any notifications about it.

    Warm regards,
    Dimitris
