I am still getting an error 404 for my feed

The Recent Global Posts Feed is still showing an error 404 through a Feed Validator and therefore is not being updated through services such as RSS Graffiti and Feedburner.

I have re-installed the plugin as per the directions on the plugin site, reset permalinks from fancy to default and back to fancy, and have verified that the permissions are correct. Someone had mentioned iframes being the problem, but I had those removed and still had the same issue. Additionally, the individual site feeds show as valid even with iframes embedded in them.

After all this, I am still getting the 404 error. Does anyone have any fresh suggestions?

    Hi @Davek

    Thanks for posting.

The feed is definitely generating(I can see it here: http://emsblogs.com/wp-content/recent-global-posts-feed.php) however as you say it doesn't validate.

It looks like there is a character encoding problem somewhere, although I can't see what it is and the section of text is enclosed in CDATA tags.

What version of the plugin are you using? Is this a Multisite? Is it Wordpress 3.5.1?

When changing the permalinks did you save after changing? I'm fairly sure this isn't the problem but good to eliminate as many possible causes early on!

    Cheers,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

I'm using the most recent version of the plugin on a Multisite installation running WP 3.5.1. I did save the changes when I changed the permalinks to DEFAULT and then again when I reset them to their "pretty" settings.

I see that the file does generate, but I don't understand why it is suddenly generating a 404 error.

Thanks for any help you can offer,
    Dave

    Hi @Davek

    Thanks for replying.

Like I said it looks like a character encoding problem, but I can't see what character is the problem and why it should be a problem.

I've flagged @Barry so he should be along soon to help out but please be patient as our developers are very busy people with a lot to do.

    Cheers,
    Mike

I'm not seeing any content at the URL above. Is that the path to your feed? If so then I'm just wondering why you are using that method and not the new method?

I'm getting a 404 here http://emsblogs.com/feed/globalpostsfeed - which is where I would expect your feed using the new method - though you don't actually give us the url in your post. Can you confirm that is the place you are looking at?

If so, can you go to your Settings -> Permalinks page and click on the Save changes button and see if that helps

    Hi Barry,

The Feed I've been using is at http://emsblogs.com/wp-content/recent-global-posts-feed.php

I installed the plugin as the documentation indicates. As mentioned in my previous post I have already done the Permalinks "solution" offered in other posts on this forum.

You mention a "new" method that I am not familiar with. Does this differ from the documentation under usage? Is this new method documented anywhere? Can you provide the needed direction?

    Please advise.

    Thanks,

    Dave

Install the plugin as a normal one, activate it in the plugins list. No need to copy files to wp- content.

Try that method and see if the URL i linked to above works.

I'm not getting any content at the other link. No 404, just a blank page, so it looks like there may be a php error there - did you see anything in your php error log?

I'm now getting a 404 error on this page
    http://emsblogs.com/wp-content/recent-global-posts-feed.php

    Have you removed that now?

Now you are using the http://emsblogs.com/feed/globalpostsfeed url - can you refresh the permalinks again? This method uses the permalinks, the other method doesn't as it is a direct file access.

Can you confirm what version of post indexer you have installed, and can you do a quick check to make sure it has some posts indexed (via the post indexer dashboard page if you are running version 3.0 + )

I have reset the permalinks to default and saved the changes but am still getting the 404 error.

I am currently using Post Indexer version 3.0.4.

Also, the old plugin was removed from WP-Content, but still getting the 404

    Exact same problem here.

    http://sfblogs.net/feed/globalpostsfeed/

In my browser / feedreader the feed is fine. However the server is responding with a 404 message:

HTTP request status: 404 (Not Found)
    Name Value
    Pragma no-cache
    Date Mon, 10 Jun 2013 13:35:16 GMT
    Content-Encoding gzip
    ETag "199522f5c06a6693c19be8a849dd4038-gzip"
    Last-Modified
    Server Apache
    X-Powered-By PHP/5.2.17
    X-Pingback http://sfblogs.net/xmlrpc.php
    Content-Type text/xml; charset=UTF-8
    Cache-Control no-cache, must-revalidate, max-age=0
    Connection close
    Vary Accept-Encoding,User-Agent
    Content-Length 7034
    Expires Wed, 11 Jan 1984 05:00:00 GMT

    Feed validator also says:
Server returned HTTP Error 404: Not Found

    http://feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsfblogs.net%2Ffeed%2Fglobalpostsfeed%2F

So the feed is there but with a 404 message.

I tried the original method with the file in /wp-content/ - no luck, same problem. Tried to change the main blog's permalink structure to default and back to nice-urls, no luck.

Not sure why your server / site is returning a 404, but yeah I do see your feed ok on the browser on my phone. I'll check the headers properly when I get back to my desk.

Not sure this is the exact same problem though, as your feed is showing whilst the original posters wasn't initially.

    Mike,

    My situation remains unresolved.

As mentioned in my last posting, the RSS Feed that the link http://emsblogs.com/feed/globalpostsfeed/ resolves to is actually the RSS Feed for the main blog at http://emsblogs.com/?feed=rss2 .

The description and previous versions of this plugin offer a RSS Feed with blog posts from all the sites in the Network, and that is not what is happening. Please advise on how I can resolve this.

    Thanks,

    Dave
