Hello, I have a client site running BuddyPress 2.2.0. It gets a huge amount of spam which involves the creation of bogus Groups. How do we stop these fake groups? Are there tools beside Akismet for stopping BuddyPress spam?

Can we restrict BuddyPress users by country? Any suggestions?

    Hi there, GFujioka!

Spammers LOVE BuddyPress groups, don't they? I went through a similar challenge on my production site last year. It's no fun at all. There are steps you can take to make this less of a hassle.

We've got a blog post here with a rundown of most of the plugin based solutions: https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/buddypress-spam/

Spammers look for specific URLs when searching out new BuddyPress sites to annoy, so another option is to use a tool like our Ultimate Branding text change tool to change "BuddyPress" to something else site/network wide.

What I did was integrate MyCred (https://wordpress.org/plugins/mycred/), and I set a minimum number of points a user needs before they can start a new group. I set the limit high enough that the user has to have left a few comments or participated in some other way before they get that permission, but low enough that legitimate members don't have to wait forever to get access. I get zero spam groups now, plus I added an extra incentive for users to participate. People love earning points.

    Hope this helps!
