Hi,
I have a question about plugin creation. I'm in the initial stages of planning/developing a plugin. Given that wordpress is open source, if we create some technology/methods in the plugin that we want to patent, is that allowed or prohibited?

    Hello Corn,

I hope you're well today and thank you for your question!

You're not required to issue all plugins following WP licensing.

If you are about to distribute the plugin via wp.org plugin repository you would have to follow these rules:

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/about/

However, if you're going to distribute it via your own channels and will not submit it to the wp.org repository, you are not restricted by any licensing rules.

There is however another thing worth noting: since you're going to protect your solutions with patents, please remember that even with strict licensing the PHP/JS/CSS code is clearly readable to everyone. There are ways to "hide" it (obfuscate) but it's not well perceived and will surely limit the market reach of your plugin and can even be detected and blocked by security scanners such as our own Defender or 3rd-party services.

I hope that makes sense

    Best regards,
    Adam
