I inherited a WP site for maintenance. It has gone down 2x

I inherited a WP site for maintenance. It has gone down 2x in the last 2 months. Host has been able to bring it back up, it's usually plugins that need updating, but theme also needs updating. Have been hesitant to make changes, relatively new to WP. This site is one of 5 under an umbrella site, only 2 of those are WP. I am contacting host now, but signed for wpmudev for ongoing help and mastering WP. Unable to access site or dashboard at the moment: <http://www.carmelsbest.com/villagecorner/

    Hi @Elizabeth

Welcome to the forums, glad to have you aboard!

Having a site go down is no fun at all. Let's see if we can help you through this, shall we?

Have been hesitant to make changes, relatively new to WP.

Don't hesitate to update themes & plugins. That's one of the best ways to keep your site secure (keeping outdated stuff on your site makes it vulnerable to known security exploits).

First of all, I can access that site with no issues (1st screenshot).

2nd, the theme you are using is version 3.3 of the MyCuisine theme from ElegantThemes.com. The current version is 3.5.

You need to login to ElegantThemes.com and download the most current version. Then you can update the theme on your site by uploading the zipped theme folder via the WordPress theme upload feature (2nd screenshot).

Whenever you see, in your themes or plugins pages in wp-admin, that an update is available, don't hesitate to click the "View details" link to see what has changed. Then click "Update now" (3rd screenshot).

    Patrick,
Thanks for the reply. You were able to access the site because the host had already completed troubleshooting. I now have info for a way for me to "fix directly" via cPanel or FTP. Host also tells me they have not seen this same issue with other WP sites, error log suggests mobiledetector plugin is the problem. I intend to contact Websitez.com for support and/or deactivate that plugin. Too bad, because client specifically wanted mobile web support. May look at ElegantThemes.com and see if they have a comparable plugin that is compatible.

Re: updates - I check site daily to do exactly this. Have been concerned about updating the MyCuisine theme as I am unsure if web designer customized the theme. I do not see that it was set up parent/child.

Thanks in advance for add'l advice / follow-up.

    Hi again @Elizabeth

I am unsure if web designer customized the theme. I do not see that it was set up parent/child.

By checking the source code, one can see that it is indeed not a child-theme.

If you are unsure about creating a child-theme for that site, or switching to a responsive theme, there are other options out there for creating mobile apps.

There's the brand new AppPresser (built by some of the same folks who build WordPress itself): http://apppresser.com/

Then there are other free alternatives like these:
