I looked at my site

Hello, I looked at my site performance through gt metrix and I have an awful score in the serve scaled images... literally a 0. This entire time I thought it was an image optimization thing. So when I saw that it told me my images where being scaled down from ex. 500 x 500 to 299 x 299 I resized them and uploaded them..but then the image looked smaller. My question is how do I fix this? My wordpress site is responsive and Im not sure if that has anything to do with it. But I don't want it to kill my rankings, SEO, or load time. Please let me know what I can do?

Best,
Stephie

    What Wordpress theme are you using? Is it customized or a standard theme?

    Under Wordpress Admin > Add Media > There's "Attachment Display Settings". This has alignment and size. If you resized the image before uploading it, ensure it's on "Full Size".

    The code written under your Wordpress Admin post/page should look something like:
    <img src="(image link)" alt="(image name)" width="940" height="331" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-128685" />

    Those classes are important for Wordpress to understand.

    The code written on the webpage, should look like for example:
    <img width="940" height="331" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-128685" alt="(image name)" src="(image link)" srcset="(image link) 940w, (image link) 300w, (image link) 768w" sizes="(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px">

    Notice the "srcset" Wordpress itself adds for various resizes. It will dish out various image reduced sizes if the page width gets smaller. This is something Wordpress and your theme should really be handling. I would suggest checking those first and making sure that's valid. It's possible the theme itself is overwriting this scaling function or you are just adjusting one of many images in a responsive theme.
