I thought I had a problem setting up chat. Login would NOT

I thought I had a problem setting up chat. Login would NOT show up on wp-admin page. I was using Chrome. Beat my head against the wall for a while and then tried it in Firefox. Worked great. What is the trick to get it to work in Chrome, All latest versions of browsers.

In chrome the login box does not show in the wp-admin area.
in Firefox it does.

All the best,
Jon

    @Jon,

    Display Bottom Corner Chat on WPAdmin? is Enabled
    Display Bottom Corner Initial View Maximized

    What URL do I need to be on to see the chat area?

    There are no special URLs. The Chat box should show within all pages of your wp-admin in the position you specified. Try going to Chat > Settings Common. Then to the first tab 'Poll Intervals' On this tab at the bottom try setting the 'Select Polling Source Type' to use 'WordPress AJAX' instead of 'Plugin AJAX'

    @Jon,

    No good. Do you have a detail step by step "how to" for someone that has 40 years of computer experience setting up just about everything, but is baffled in setting up this chat? :grinning:

    Ha. Well I'm in the same boat. You are probably just over qualified.

    What I want to do is assign a chat to a wordpress password protect page that only registered people can log into and post and read using Google+

    Before we go there. Does chat work anywhere on your site? Anywhere meaning within wp-admin or on the front-end? Apologies, I might have confused threads on you. I thought you were having trouble specific to showing the bottom corner chat within wp-admin.

    @Jon,

    No written guide. Other than our Usage tab on the Chat project page https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/wordpress-chat-plugin/#usage

    The overall setup of a Page chat is simple at least from our perspective.

    1. First review the settings on Chat > Settings Page. Part attention to the Authentication tab where you set the default login options as well as moderator options. Save the settings.

    2. Then go to Posts/Pages. Create a new Post/Page. Ensure you are using the 'Visual' editor tab.

    3. Click the chat toolbar button. See image, Customize the chat settings. Click the Insert button in the bottom right of the popup.

    4. View the page. You should see the chat.

    5. If you do not see the chat then go to Chat > Settings Common. Then to the first tab 'Poll Intervals'. At the bottom of this panel check the value of the settings 'Select Polling Source Type'. By default it uses 'Plugin AJAX'. In most server configuration it will work. If you don't see the chat on the new Post/Page try changing the setting to 'WordPress AJAX'. Then reload the chat page.

    @Jon,

    Alright getting somewhere. When I view that page with a debugger I'm showing a JavaScript error. This JavaScript error stops all other JavaScript actions.

    The specific error is TypeError: jQuery(...).on is not a function

    So for some reason JS/jQuery is aborting because it does not consider the function .on() which is part of jQuery and has been since version 1.7 http://api.jquery.com/on/ From your HTML source I'm showing you are running the default jQuery library which comes with WordPress and is version 1.10.2.

    So digging deeper into the HTML source I see where there is a second and older version of jQuery being loaded. Here is the full line

    <script src="http://app.expressemailmarketing.com/poseidon/scripts/jQuery/jquery-1.6.2-full.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

    Any idea where that line is coming from? Appear it is loading an older version of jQuery 1.6.2 which is effecting the newer version needed by Chat.

    OK here is goes:

    1) Question: What is the best way for my users to be able to upload there own avatars and not use the Global avatar system. I would like it to work for your chat, posting comments and photos for authors on their articles.

    2) New Option: It would be great to have more difference when the name is posted on a chat post. The text they type goes right against the name. See attached image. Can a be placed there so the text post is under the name. Can you add a option to change the color of the name that is posted so it looks different there. See attached image. I know that it can be done when listing current people

    3) New Feature: When a image link is added to the chat could it be html coded <img src= so that it would be displayed in the chat and width be added to keep it inside the chat window. It would link to the full size image. You could add configuration options on file type, etc.

    4) New Option:Can we have a list of sounds to pick from for the new message bell?

    That is all for now. THANKS

    @Jon,

    1) Question: What is the best way for my users to be able to upload there own avatars and not use the Global avatar system.

    No. Not within Chat. And really no plans for that. There are dozens of avatar management plugin out there. There are some that let the user upload an avatar local to your site and it will be used instead of the global/Gravatar icon.

    2. Can a be placed there so the text post is under the name.

    You can force a break after the name by adding some simple CSS to your theme.

    .wpmudev-chat-box .wpmudev-chat-module-messages-list p.wpmudev-chat-message a.wpmudev-chat-user-name {
    	display:block;
    }

    Or instead of having both the avatar and the name which in my opinion is like wearing a belt and suspenders. You can go to Chat > Settings Page > Message Appearance tab. Look for the option 'Show Avatar/Name'. Set the option to show what you want.

    Can you add a option to change the color of the name that is posted so it looks different there.

    Well this option is sort of there already. Again on the Chat > Settings Page > Message Appearance tab. You will see the option for the color of the user name vs the color of the moderator name. See image. And I think I just saw a bug in the UI where those values are not showing. Try changing the 'Show Avatar/Name' drop down. See if they display then.

    Of course a cool option would also be to assign a color to each unique user that way it is more visual for the user. But not something we have considered yet. Mostly because the avatar already provides a visual distinction.

    3) New Feature: When a image link is added to the chat could it be html coded

    We are considering this for 2014. I had it on my to do list along with some formatting options but didn't get around to it. We've had requests to support actual image uploads like we do on our own Live Support chat sessions. So this will probably be coming soon.

    4) New Option:Can we have a list of sounds to pick from for the new message bell?

    Yeah, this has been requested a few times. Might be something we can get into chat for first quarter of 2014.

    Great help. Super Customer Support.

    1) If I get a avatar plug-in will your chat support it automatically. Can you recommend one.

    2) Great CSS clue. Made all kinds of changes. LOL
    Yes there is a bug and the color choices go away. I see that I can change the values first then if I change the pull down they go away.

    3) Holding my Breath in anticipation.

    4) Not holding my breath at all. (Someone else request.)

    NEW STUFF:

    5) How about the ability to have a chat session be set to archive each day at a set time. We would have a specific page archive at midnight each day. That would be great for how we use chat. People could go back and see what they have missed on a specific day. And I will not have to stay up past my bedtime to push the button.

    THANKS AGAIN

    @Jon,

    Great help. Super Customer Support.

    Thanks. Always glad to help. I know things were frustrating at first. Glad you didn't give up and go away thinking the issue was with the chat plugin.

    1) If I get a avatar plug-in will your chat support it automatically. Can you recommend one.

    Most any plugin should work. Internally the chat plugin just calls the WordPress function get_avatar() ( http://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/get_avatar ) and it is that function which will check the local user avatar or also go out to the Gravatar system to pull in the image based on the user information. I generally like to pitch our own plugins. We have an Avatars plugin. But sadly the developer wrote it to only work for Multisite. A good one I guess is http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-user-avatar/

    2) Yes there is a bug and the color choices go away.

    Already fixed in the soon to be released 2.0.7 version to come out this week.

    5) How about the ability to have a chat session be set to archive each day at a set time.

    Yep, this was requested over the summer but not since. I recently added the Chat > Session Logs section. This lets you the admin see all chats. It also lets you see Open vs. Archived sessions. So yeah the next logic step is to have some automated was to purge old archives as well as auto-archive existing records. This is coming soon.

    Thanks for the suggestions. Keep them coming.
