Image Compression still needs more - what else do I do?

Hey There!
I think I have WP Smush Pro configured really well but my Performance Test Score for Image Optimization is still an 8.

I keep smushing and have smushed everything. There are 3 images that return with an error though that they couldn't be smushed. "Error posting to API: 500 Internal Server Error"

I'm not sure what else to do to get this score higher than an 8?
Please help ASAP as we want to start sending reports to this client and this looks awful on the report having such a low score.

Thank you!
AJ

    Hi AJ,

Hope you are doing well

I have tried to check your site in gtmetrix I can see there are suggestion about improvements in image optimization. As you have mentioned you have configured Smush and optimized the images I have tried check if it is optimized or not. I have download the image and tried to Smush it again and I can see the image size is the same so it suggests that the image is already compressed. Then when I checked the front of your site and inspect the images and found that your site is loading large dimention images and then scaling them down to show them in smaller dimension. This is the image loading here

This actually depends on the theme code. Smush compresses the images but the loading of images is upto the theme. To optimize this you can either resize the images and use that. This article may help here https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/compress-resize-images-wordpress/

However if the same images are used in post or any where else then that can break the design. In that case contact the theme supplier so that they can edit the theme template files to load image thumbnails with similar width height of the element that contains it.

    Hope this clarifies.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you need any more help.

Wish you a very Happy New Year

    Cheers,
    Sohag

    Hi AJ,

Thanks for granting access, I was checking your reports and have to say I'm not clear what exactly is going on here.
Images reported for Compressing are all compressed properly and they are not shown in GTMetrix, and in Google Page Speed test they are showing that they can give better results by using them in JPEG 2000, JPEG XR, or WebP formats to further reduce their size.

Other reports are about Compress and Resizing, this happens when you're loading images larger than they HTML holder, and the smaller image should be loaded to fix this report.

Both of these issues should be addressed by enabling Smush CDN as it offers to use WebP format and automatically serve images that fit their HTML holder.
I would suggest enabling this option to see if that will help but in addition to that we would like to investigate your site further if you could provide us with FTP or cPanel access so we can check the files directly.

    Hi AJ,

I would try to explain what Predrag was trying to tell you.

There are 8 errors that is causing the score to go low.

The first 4 errors (noted below) states that those 4 images can be further optimized and can be reduced by 70+% per image. To do this it is advised to enable CDN as it serves the images in WebP format which have better compression ratios tha that of other image formats.

    Compressing https://iccaastoria.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/6.jpg could save 289.4KiB (73% reduction).
    Compressing https://iccaastoria.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/7.jpg could save 287.9KiB (76% reduction).
    Compressing https://iccaastoria.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/5.jpg could save 284.2KiB (75% reduction).
    Compressing https://iccaastoria.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/4.jpg could save 279.1KiB (74% reduction).

The other 4 errors (noted below) states that the images that are loaded are bigger than the HTML containers in which they are loaded. Smush CDN has a smart resize feature where it serves the images resized based on the size of the container in which it is loaded. So we would again advise to go ahead and enable the Smush CDN.

Compressing and resizing https://iccaastoria.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Screen-Shot-2018-11-14-at-10.22.46-AM.png could save 224.2KiB (84% reduction).
Compressing and resizing https://iccaastoria.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/Nativity-5.jpeg could save 134KiB (92% reduction).
    Compressing https://iccaastoria.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/financialaid.jpg could save 57.7KiB (65% reduction).
Compressing and resizing https://iccaastoria.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/cropped-header-logo-v2.jpg could save 35.1KiB (88% reduction).

Please never leave the login credentials in the forum thread as these threads are public and are indexed by search engines.

While you do the suggested changes, we would like to further investigate the issue on your site and hence are requesting you to send the FTP & CPanel credentials to us via our secure contact form on https://premium.wpmudev.org/contact/#i-have-a-different-question and use the following template to send the details.

    Hi AJ,

Thanks for sending those in, I was looking at your site further and the thing here is that Google has changed its speed test results and Compress report now shows results when images can be further reduced by using WebP format.

So Smush CDN basically deals with both that and Compress & Resize report by server correctly resized images and I had no issues enabling this on your site.
However, once the images were server from CDN only one of your slider images was loading properly, rest of them were resized to 1x1 pixels.

I tested Soliloquy slider on my test site but couldn't replicate the issue so it seems that something else is causing this on your installation.
Would it be possible for you to disable all the plugins except Smush, Soliloquy and WPMU DEV Dashboard, switch to default WP theme and see if the images are loading properly after that?

If not, could you setup a staging site where this could be tested?

    Best regards,
    Predrag
