Is there a good oLark alternative for 1-on-1 chat?

We have played around with an oLark plugin that lets our readers IM us directly from our WordPress site, and loved it. They chat (even anonymously) directly from the site, and we get it in our IM client.

But... The oLark plugin is orphaned, and had limitations on the number of chat sessions per month.

Is there anything else like this out there?

We signed up form WPMU DEV in part because we hoped the chat plugin would be a good replacement, but it is not at all what we expected. We aren't looking for a chat room, and when we tried it the chats were way too laggy to be interactive.

Is there any other good chat alternatives to be found? We love chatting with our readers - there has got to be a way!

    Thanks for the leads, Joe.

The Volusion plugin seems very commerce focused. We just want a simple way for readers to be able to chat with the site owner, not with "operators" for sales or support. But it does have a free version - but sadly requires a PC and a native client for the operator to chat. We are Mac and iOS based.

The Skysa plugin requires a monthly subscription that is not well matched to just wanting an easy way to chat every so often.

Is there any plugin out there that integrates WordPress with Jabber? This is an open / free IM protocol supported by tons of IM clients - we don't need any fancy features for multiple "operators" or any of the commerce-focused features.

Simple 1-on-1 chat is the goal. I am surprised that no one seems to have done this, I wonder if there is a technical hurdle?
