Let's say I have a page protected by the Membership plugin

Let's say I have a page protected by the Membership plugin and it has links on that page to some documents that are for members only. Are the links on the page protected completely from search engines and spiders? I want to make sure that those links won't show up in a google search. Also, I need to make sure those links won't be able to be shared.

Thanks!

    Heya, mccawphoto!

What I would do is provide URL group protection for your docs, so they can't be accessed by non-members, no matter what.

To do that, go to Membership > URL Groups, and add the first part of the URL for your docs with an * as a wildcard at the end, so like:
http://yoursite.com/docs/* or, alternatively http://yoursite.com/docs/(*) if the previous link isn't sufficient.

We can't promise 111% that the files will never be index-able by search engines - that technology changes all the time - but we do all in our power to make sure your content is fully protected. : )

    Hope this helps!

@mccawphoto I actually installed and uninstalled the Protected Content Plugin... because of the date of last update in https://wordpress.org/plugins/protected-content/ indicated no update activity... @theauthor I'm guessing you don't list it on WordPress.org anymore... so you should dump the link or update that info...

HOWEVER... the WPMUDEV shows pretty active upgrading... so please let me know how it works out for you -- if you give this plugin a spin... Thanks in Advance!

    Hey mccawphoto,

    Hope you're doing well today!

It won't hide the links automatically when you block the access, but when you click the you won't see the correct image unless you are the right member level. What you can do instead, is also use the membership shortcode and wrap the links in the shortcode

That way they will be hidden from everyone unless they have access to it. I believe this includes search engines too, as they view the page as just a visitor.

    Hope this helps!

    All the best,
    Tyler

PS. @RobertKwasny that's actually not our plugin there, we don't have a wp.org version of Protected Content.
