Local WP installation stopped working while live previewing Farms themes

I have a local test installation of WP with BuddyPress, using MAMP. I was live previewing your Farm pack themes, when suddenly the whole WP stopped working. Now I only get this: http://puu.sh/2tDcb

I think the last theme I had activated was BP Corporate. I also tried to activate Batavia, as it was showing nothing in live preview, but that just gave an error. After that I was live previewing Bluebird I think, don’t remember if there was some other previews between these.

I’ve tried restarting MAMP, that didn’t help. Hope I don’t need to start from a clean installation :disappointed:

Hello there @outi, I hope you’re well today!

Do you have access to your error logs? That would give us some idea about what’s going on.

It would also be useful if you could open up your wp-config.php file and set WP_DEBUG to true.

If all else fails, you can simply delete the farms themes from wp-content/themes.

If it was because of a theme it will automatically use the default twentytwelve theme and you should be able to continue working.

    I hope that helps!

If you need any further assistance don’t hesitate to post back here.

    Cheers,

    Ari.

This is my error log for today. Can you see what went wrong? Would be nice to try the Batavia theme also, it looks beautiful. I’ll go turn the debugging on now. And btw, great avatar picture

Ok, that seemed to fix it! I got my dashboard back

Can I use the Farms themes with BuddyPress? Or what should I do if I need to have different closed member areas (for different members each), preferably each with forums? The farms themes looked beautiful, I would love to use (one of) them.

    I’m glad to hear that!

Can I use the Farms themes with BuddyPress?

I wouldn’t recommend it… We have specialized themes for BuddyPress!

Or what should I do if I need to have different closed member areas (for different members each), preferably each with forums?

I’m afraid I don’t quite understand what you mean there… Could you please elaborate?

    Cheers,

    Ari.

Well, I have this site that I want to use for publishing information on stress, personality, career planning, creativity, mindfulness, life traps, and anything else that has to do with getting a better life. I also want to sell products and online courses there. And I want to run the courses there. And possibly I might want to run a blog later.

So the course areas needs to be closed, only accessible for people who have bought the corresponding course. For example, X has bought a stress management course and so has access to the stress management course area.

The course areas would have a course forum, maybe chat, hopefully some system for marking your progress, that kind of stuff that’s needed for running a course.

And to top this all, I want to run the site both in Finnish and in English  Finnish is the first one on the list, however.

I’m new to WP (been playing with it a week now), and haven’t done any web design before. But I do have an otherwise geeky background, from engineering and C programming, so thought I could give this a try  But I do feel a bit lost. And I’m not very graphical at all, so would like to get a theme that’s beautiful as a starting point. I don’t want to invent all the background pictures and colors and layout and fonts and whatnot. I’m really really uncertain with those things.

I checked your buddypress themes already, and they are a bit empty. Very customizable, I’m sure. But that’s why I already fell in love with the Farms themes, they were all graphical

To be honest, I don’t quite know where to start. Could I somehow pick a Farms theme and take the nice graphical things from it to a buddypress theme? Do I need buddypress? (It does look like it could do the job.) Is there a way to make a Farms theme BP-compatible? Wasn’t there a plugin that could be used for that? I did read that you need to know html and css to do that. I’m not afraid of code really, but I haven’t done almost anything with them before

Long post, lots of rambling! I’m not sure if I’m asking the right questions, feel free to answer any I’m not asking

Have you taken a look at the Membership plugin?

This could be what you’re looking for…

If you want to sell your courses one-by-one you could use the Pay Per View plugin instead!

And to top this all, I want to run the site both in Finnish and in English  Finnish is the first one on the list, however.

No problem… WPML is the perfect fit for you! It is the plugin most sites prefer to handle their multilingual needs.

Do I need buddypress? (It does look like it could do the job.)

BuddyPress will simply add profiles, activities wall (similar to a facebook wall), groups and other “social”-like stuff to your site.

If all you need is blogs (and from what you described above that’s what I understood) then bbPress is a better match for you!

Is there a way to make a Farms theme BP-compatible?

Though they were not designed to do that, yes you can. But it will require some copy-pasting and basic coding skills. You can try using this plugin to make them compatible: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/ though I think that the BuddyPress 1.7 won’t need that… you can get a beta of bp 1.7 here: http://buddypress.org/2013/03/buddypress-1-7-beta-2/ let me know if that works for you…

The safest route (and more helpful to you) would be to upload your site on a test live server and whenever you have an issue create a new thread here with a link to your site so that we may see it in action and help you out with html, php & css.

    I hope that helps!

    Cheers,

    Ari.

    Was that helpful?

Ari, thank you so much. I will check those plugins, and also the BP beta version. And I’ll mark this now as resolved. I actually do have an external URL to my local site (so that I got Jetpack working), I’ll remember to post it in any future threads. Had to use a funny port number for it, and set up port forwarding

Thank NAME, for their help.
