match name upon signup

Hi all, I've recently started using the buddypress profile groups to allow a quick and painless signup for new members (I'm using the pop-over form that comes with the membership plugin).

Most of my members now don't have their name displayed publicly at all and all new members don't have their names displayed publicly (as in 'howdy name').

How can I keep the two buddypress profile groups but match the name upon signup and for the existing community members?

    Forgive my confusion but, are you using the BuddyPress registration form in the popup, or the Membership registration form?

    If you are using BP registration, it may conflict with Membership registration.

    Can you provide a link to your site? And do you have any objection to me creating a test account?

    Hi Patrick we're at http://www. marketingcompass . co . uk (minus the spaces) feel free to create a test account- I'm using the pop up registration form the membership plugin, however you can complete your profile once inside the site, those fields are generated by the buddypress fields.

    Right then. I created a free account and noticed right away the missing name in the sidebar widget and in the adminbar.

    Further, I can confirm that the display name selected when editing profile info does save but it does not display.

    Viewing my profile info in wp-admin shows a conspicuous absence of data: in the "Name" section, only the username is populated. However, once I've filled in that info in the backend, all is well on the frontend.

    Here's where things got interesting: once everything was displaying properly on the frontend, I tried editing my display name via my BP profile in the frontend. When saving that edit, all previously entered name data disappeared from both front and back ends!

    This sounded suspiciously similar to a bug that I remember being present in the early release of BP1.5: BP & WP name data not synching properly.

    I believe that what is happening here is that you have changed the name of the base "Name" in your BP extended profile settings to "Display Name". Change that back to "Name" and save. This should populate the database fields with the right info. Then you should be able to rename the field "Display Name".

    HI Patrick, I just renamed the field 'Name' and tested with a new account & it's working. There are a few members in the backend who's display name are still not set, but I'd rather deal with those indivually when the come up than have to do it manually on every new member!

    Hi Patrick, the other thing I've noticed happening regularly with my profile fields is that external links to someone's website or an email link doesn't work, when you hover over a link you can see that all links try to go somewhere within my site:

    And the email address does much the same...
