Membership: Allowing Visitor Access

My main goal for using membership is to create subscriptions. But I'm not interested in protecting content.

My goal is to have the Site creation and hosting be the real service. So- when I installed Membership, it immediately protected all of the content on http://edreach.us

I don't need everyone to register just to view content, so I still want Free Visitor Access to all content on EdReach. Can you tell me how to set that up?

Thanks!

    Hey Daniel,

Hope you're doing well today and thanks for your question!

My goal is to have the Site creation and hosting be the real service. So- when I installed Membership, it immediately protected all of the content on http://edreach.us

It looks like you are using Positive rules for your access levels. The way Membership works is that with positive rules it shows only what you list as 'positive' and everything else is protected. Vice versa for negative rules - what you list is available and everything else is protected.

So my advice would be to use negative rules. You shouldn't have any empty levels either, so even for one where you don't actually need protect anything, just protect a dummy page as negative

I just need visitors to be able to view everything.

place a single dummy page in negative rules for the 'visitors' level then they will be able to see your entire site except 1 page

My goal is to have the Site creation and hosting be the real service.

With all that said, I'm wondering if perhaps Pro Sites would be a better fit for you? https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/pro-sites/

It was designed to help you create a site creation/hosting style service with Multisite

Another option, if you would rather do the membership method you're thinking of, then you could do Protected Content. https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/protected-content/

Protected Content doesn't require content to be protected for the memberships. You can protect nothing but still sell the memberships

It also supports Stripe payment gateway which Membership doesn't.

Hope this helps Daniel! Let us know if you need any further assistance.

    All the best,
    Tyler

    Hey Daniel,

    Thanks for your reply!

I'm looking at your home page and I'm not seeing any protected content on it.

I went to a bunch of your posts from the home page and none of them were protected either. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the issue?

Is this as a visitor that you're seeing protected content?

WPEngine has some pretty aggressive caching on the server side, do you mind using a different browser and seeing if the content displays or not?

    Talk to you soon Daniel!

    Cheers,
    Tyler

    PS.

I like the Pro Sites plugin, but I think it will work best as a way to upgrade people after they subscribe, no?

Are you using Membership to manage the payment for their own site? Pro Sites would work better for this because then it would track their site expiry and all that and ensure that there site isn't available if payment isn't made.

If you're using membership for there initial signup then they can create their site and use pro sites for upgrades then that could work; however, having membership and pro sites on the same site doesn't work well as they both take over the registration.
