Membership: restrict categories to users

Hey there –

I am using the Membership plugin to develop my son’s cub scout pack. I did their site almost 3 years ago with plain vanilla WordPress (and some custom code for Membership areas), but the code is outdated, and some of the plugins I used aren’t working properly, blah blah blah. So I’m working on a new update for the back end. I wanted to use membership to control the access for everything (because it’s a whole lot easier), and with the BuddyPress integration, it’ll be easy to do the things I need to do.

One question I had was about allowing members to have access to certain categories. But in this case, I don’t want to restrict reading certain categories based on your logged-in status – I was to restrict where you post to. The cub scout pack has different levels (Tigers, Wolves, bears, WEBELOS), and each level (den) has their own “leader”. I was wondering if there was a way to prevent the “Tiger” den leader from accidentally/on purpose posting to the “Bears” section of the site.

It’s not that it’s a problem, but I figured it’s just one more thing that could be made easier – so when the den leader logs in, whatever they post goes directly to where it should go, without having to remember to check he category it should go in (among other things that need to be done).

Is that possible?

    Check out Role Scoper:

Should do what you need it to do. If not that check out Advanced Role Manager:

However integration with Memberships is a little hard to do if you are doing pure automatic role assigning, as far as I know that feature isn’t in Memberships, but I will be making a feature request right now anyway, because I need a functionality that provides user level a role that it is given to help assign what I need it to.

Hope this helps you at least a bit for the time being!

    thanks for posting.

with buddypress you can setup forums for groups. your scouts/cubs/ etc can then be assigned to a particular group, the den leader can be made admin of their respective groups.

this would allow the seperation of posts and restrict them from posting in wrong groups etc. as each group would have it's own unique forum to use.

in the settings area, select the forums tab and select group forums.

    hope this helps.

    Thanks all

Yes, I was already setting up each den with a BuddyPress group (and I snagged your all’s plugin for Group Messaging), but they make public posts for people to see, and they each post in their own public category.

However, I was just looking at the site, and they don’t update those categories very often at all. So I’m thinking I’m going to remove those and just stick with the groups. the only one who seems to update anything is the Cubmaster. So I think I’ll just do some general rearranging and not worry about it.

    Thanks for the tips!
