Membership v Protected Content v ProCourses

Hi everyone. I am building a site which will have premium training courses, premium eBooks, and a forum that only shows some aspects to the public.

I am fairly new here and feel like I have read 1000 posts trying to find the best solution. I am still confused as to go with Membership (read a post saying it may be retired so thats a concern), Protected Content and/or ProCourses.

The challenge I have is this
- the training is one product and I am still not sure if I want to put the work into setting up ProCourses as it seems like a lot of work. Also as they are videos, with PPTs and PDFs do I need to store them on a Amazon S3?
- some of the eBooks are a totally different products and unlikely to be of value to the people using the training
- the other products are not valuable to either of the above.

So having a membership level where everyone has access to everything seems crazy. I suppose I could have different levels, but isn't that just making memberships act like Protected Content?

Then to complicate it, I want to add a forum that is protected as well. Think of it like a WP MU DEV for a specific aspect of the corporate sector.

Help, I am so confused

Thanks, Steve

    Hello @Steve

    Welcome to WPMU community!

I hope you are well today and thanks for asking the question.

I will suggest to go with Protected Content as this is re-designed and will be under development.

After reading the scenario, I am little confused that are you selling courses of PDF items? If PDF and videos are part of the course, then CoursePress Pro is the best solution, yes.

You can store your items in Amazon S3 or even in your server, that's up to you.

I suppose I could have different levels, but isn't that just making memberships act like Protected Content?

Yes, you can have different levels (membership in protected content). You need to create memberships and set the content available for that membership.

You can protect your forum as well, using simply URL groups rule which supports regular expression.

Hope it helps  Please feel free to ask more question if you have.

    Cheers

    Hi Ash

    Thanks for the response.

Ok, what I have got from your response is,

    1. better to go with Protected Content rather than memberships as this is redesigned and will be under development.

    2. I can store my course content on S3 (or other) but it isn't a absolute requirement. I am sure I read somewhere that it should be this way as it keeps you site quick

    3. I could use memberships but there is configuration required, which suppose is required for anything

    4. Given each module of our training has a PPT, a PDF workbook, and a video ProCourses is the best solution for that aspect.

So it looks like i have to invest the time into ProCourses, and stick with Protected content. Is that correct?

    I have 2 more questions.

    1. What do you mean by

You can protect your forum as well, using simply URL groups rule which supports regular expression.

    2. Do i need to use market press to turn it all into a eCommerce solution?

    Thanks

    Steve

    Hello @Steve

I hope you are well today.

Yes, you got it right  About your questions:

    What do you mean by

You can protect your forum as well, using simply URL groups rule which supports regular expression.

In both membership and protected content plugin we have an option called URL groups. URL groups is added as an addon in protected content so if you use protected content you need to enable this add on to use. In membership, this is already activated. The logic is same in both plugins.

For example, you have a forum called my-forum, so your URLs look like:
    http://domain.com/forums/forum/my-forum/topic-slug-1
    http://domain.com/forums/forum/my-forum/topic-slug-2
    http://domain.com/forums/forum/my-forum/topic-slug-3
    and so on....

So, you want to protect this forum from a level.

Then you can use a URL group with the following expression:
    http://domain.com/forums/forum/my-forum/*

And protect this URL group for any level or membership. Any URL starts with http://domain.com/forums/forum/my-forum/ will be protected

Do i need to use market press to turn it all into a eCommerce solution?

Yes, if you want to offer paid courses, then you need to use MarketPress plugin. CoursePress has built in configuration for marketpress

Hope it helps  Please feel free to ask more question if you have.

    Cheers
