Missing images in Media Library

Some of the images in one of my subsites have gone missing. Smush Pro says there are 31 images -- I only see 9 of them.

I have granted you access to the entire network -- please go to the lizlevenson.com subsite.

    Hello Larry Levenson

I hope you are well today.

Actually, you may not be missing any images at all. When you upload an image to WordPress, you may only see 1 image in the Media Library, but actually multiple variations of that image are created.

For example, in WP Admin -> Settings -> Media, you will see 3 image sizes defined there. Those are the default image crop sizes.

So, if you upload 9 images, WordPress will actually have up to 36 images it's accounting for.

    9 Original images
    9 Large Size images
    9 Medium Size images
    9 Small Size images

Since you are only seeing 31 images, it's likely that the some of the images you uploaded are smaller than the dimensions set in the Large Size setting, thus reducing the total count of created cropped images.

Smush recognizes ALL images associated in the Media Library. This includes the Original image sizes, the WordPress default thumnails (cropped images) and any image resizing you specify in Smush or through your theme with the add_image_size() function.

The best way to be sure is to check wp-content/uploads/ and drill into your image storage. Usually you will see file names something like the following:

As you can see in the above filenames, this is actually 10 variations (sizes) of the same image. Smush will see all 10. The Media Library only displays 1 in the default view.

I hope this clarifies a bit. Let us know if you have any further questions. We'll be happy to help!

    Best regards,

    James Morris
