multisite stability with plugin conflicts

Hi,

just a very general question here.

if there is a conflict/issue with a plugin/theme on the main site and that main site basically shows a white screen with php error messages etc, will that cause all sites on the network to go down ?

will it make a difference if the plugin in question is not network activated or used on the other sites ?

what about conflicts/issues on sub sites ?

basically i am trying to get a better appreciation/understanding on how and when conflicts/issues can affect an entire multisite.

when reading reviews on blogs about pros and cons of WP multisite they would usually say something like “issues on the main site can affect the entire network” but this is pretty general and i would like to get a bit more specific feedback.

any experience in this shared would be greatly appreciated.

kind regards.

    Hey Randall,

Always good to hear from ya

Not unless both plugin/theme are also active and conflicting on other sites too. If the plugin is network activated and there is a theme that it conflicts with and causes WSOD, then only sites with that theme active will go down

issues on the main site can affect the entire network

They do all share the same database, but each site has it’s own set of tables, then there are global tables like wp_users that are shared across the whole network. Large networks usually means large database which can slow down your network. We do have a multi-DB plugin to help avoid that once your site gets large enough though

If you install a broken plugin, then it will be broken across all sites. Also, if your subsites all have a different purpose and require different plugins then your network can get really bloated.

We actually have an awesome intro post to Multisite to you can check out: https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/wordpress-multisite-guide/

Hope this helps Randall! Let us know if you have any further questions.

    All the best,

    Tyler
