MultiSITE SubDomains Site-Links resolve to an 404

Greetings Folks,

Please may I have assistance on broken page links on network blogs

MultiSite page links on SubDomain sites resolve to a 404:
The subdomain appears to be created, but additional pages created in a blog/site link to a 404.

Is this a Permalink issue, perhaps? If so, could a kind person guide me to what Permalink I should set, please? And, is the Permalink a Network-wide default. I wouldn't want users having a 404 on their additional page links.

I set a wildcard * in cpanel for the network domain.

My .htaccess:

<RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]

# add a trailing slash to /wp-admin
RewriteRule ^wp-admin$ wp-admin/ [R=301,L]

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
RewriteRule ^ - [L]
RewriteRule ^(wp-(content|admin|includes).*) $1 [L]
RewriteRule ^(.*\.php)$ $1 [L]
RewriteRule . index.php [L]

================
MultiSite Network resides in domain root. However, having just taken a look at the document root structure, there exists NO subdomain directories. Is that normal for subdomains? are they created only in the DB tables?

Your thoughts gratefully received.

Mike.
