non-www to www in Multisite Domain Mapping makes a Redirect Loop

I have my site,, set as the non-www format with the Domain Mapping Plugin, and it works great. My problem is, I need to switch it to the www format (for SEO/backlinks). I deleted that domain, and re-added it as It allowed me to do that fine, but when I tried to visit the site it gives me an error that it is stuck in a redirect. I cleared my cache and cookies. All my other sites in my multisite are set as the www version and they work fine. Also, my .htaccess file is the default wordpress multisite file.

Thanks for your help.

    Hello nicolesauk,

I hope you are well today. Thank you for having Support Staff Login enabled so I could look into this further.

Since the other sites on your network are working with the www variation of the domain, I suspect the issue is in the domain registrar or in the hosting control panel. Have you checked in those locations for any redirection?

When I checked the network query when attempting to access it kept attempting to redirect to This suggests there is some redirection somewhere.

Please double-check your domain registrar and hosting control panel to ensure there are no redirects. If there are not, please reply back here and we’ll be more than happy to dig into this issue further.

    Best regards,

    James Morris

Hi James, I looked into my domain registar and my cpanel, and found no redirects. I am messaging my host just to be sure though. I’m wondering if maybe they set one up when they hooked up my SSL certificate. I’ll let you know when I hear back from them. Thank you for your help.

    Hello nicolesauk

Nice point on setting up SSL, most of the time they set a redirect from one version to the main version of the domain. Maybe they did the same.

One more thing, before adding the domain to the domain mapping panel, if you enter the www version of the domain, what happens then?

Let us know what you hear back from them.

    Have a nice day!

    Hi guys,

So this is what my host said:

“There is issue in how WordPress handles it

The direct link to test page is working well via www. record

When I disable all your plugins it redirect me to no-secured site

You need to check your internal redirects to sort this problem out

I advise you clone to separate folder and keep it as separate website instead of mixing both in one directory “ is my main website of the multisite install. is the only site on the network that has an SSL certificate, if that matters.

    Hi nicolesauk ,

    Hope you’re doing well today!

Working here alongside with my teammates James and Ashok.

Based on your description, I think this could be an issue with the current version of Domain Mapping. It was already reported that using HTTPS protocol with WWW causes a redirect to the HTTP version (non secure).

Our developers already fixed this and it will be included in the next release.

Meantime, I can share the “development” version of the plugin. Just need to mention that it was not fully tested by our QA yet, however I tested it on my install and didn’t found any issues. So, if you are interested:

    1) Download the .zip file attached and unzip it;

    2) Using FTP access upload and replace all the files inside the “/wp-content/plugins/domain-mapping” folder.

If you don’t feel confortable in doing this, can you send us the FTP details of your website, so we can try this new version of Domain Mapping to check if solves your issue? Please send it privately through our contact form:
