Not showing earlier backups in Snapshot admin list of a scheduled backup to Google Drive

Backup that has destination set to Google Drive and scheduled for daily shows all the backups in the Google Drive but shows only one in the Admin Snapshot list. It is set to keep last 30 backups, but in site admin it just shows the last one. Is there any way to see the earlier backups in the admin list so that restoring an earlier backup can easily be done.

    Hello Dominique,

    I hope you're well today and thank you for your question!

    The choice of backups to restore shows up during the "restore" procedure. On "Snapshot -> Snapshots" page you will see a list of your snapshots, as in "list of scheduled tasks". If you have only one "backup task" created, only one will be visible there.

    However, if you either enter this snapshot and click on restore button or select "Restore" option from the drop-down options list on snapshots list, there's an option to "Select the archive you wish to restore from" and it will list all the archive files created by this specific "backup tasks".

    I have checked your site and I see that there's more than one backup available (six of them currently), take a look at this screenshot from your site, please:

    There, you can select from which backup to restore the site.

    That said, I do realize that's not 30 backups indeed so the question is: where all those 30 backups created with this specific snapshot ("backup task":wink: or was there another one before? For example, there might have been a snapshot created that was working and then instead of being edited, it could be removed and a new one created. Did anything like that happened?

    What are the file names for the backup archives dated for Jan 6th (the oldest one visible there) and for e.g. Jan 5th (some older one, not visible)?

    Best regards,
    Adam

    Hi Adam,

    Thanks for taking the time to answer my support request.

    When pressing the 'restore' option I can indeed see the backups that have been created. But it's weird: at the moment I still see only 6 backups, but now they range from 12 to 17 januari. This makes it look like there's only six backups available, while Google Drive has many more available, as is visible on your screenshot from last friday. I've extended the support access so you can further investigate.

    -----
    I've got some more questions following your initial message. You wrote: "However, if you either enter this snapshot and click on restore button or select "Restore" option from the drop-down options list on snapshots list.."
    -> how do I 'enter' the snapshot? I've only discovered the "Restore" option from the drop-down. If I simply click the name of the snapshot (noesteijver.nl) I enter the details about the last snapshot.

    Another question: is The Hub going to take into consideration that backups could be created this way? At the moment The Hub only seems to considerate if a managed backup has been made.
    At a daily basis backups are being created for noesteijver.nl, but The Hub thinks that the latest backup is outdated, as is visible in screenshot below.

    Hello Dominique,

    thanks for your response!

    how do I 'enter' the snapshot? I've only discovered the "Restore" option from the drop-down. If I simply click the name of the snapshot (noesteijver.nl) I enter the details about the last snapshot.

    You're right, I should have been more specific about that :slight_smile: By "enter" I meant clicking on its name and then on a big blue "Restore" button. That's actually the same as going directly to "Restore" option from the drop-down list.

    Another question: is The Hub going to take into consideration that backups could be created this way? At the moment The Hub only seems to considerate if a managed backup has been made.

    No, backups that you see in The Hub are only from Managed Backups, those are backups that are stored in our Cloud while "snapshots" (so backups like those pushed to GDrive etc) are considered as completely separate.

    At a daily basis backups are being created for noesteijver.nl, but The Hub thinks that the latest backup is outdated, as is visible in screenshot below.

    The managed backups schedule is currently set to weekly for that site. You can see it on both the screenshot that you shared and on "Snapshot -> Managed Backups" page in your site's back-end. Currently it shows two backups, one from Jan 3rd and one from Jan 17th (so today).

    Actually, between 3rd and 17th there's two weeks rather than one so that's not fine but I suppose (since you mentioned it was supposed to be daily, not weekly) that there might have been some changes made to that schedule meanwhile or it might have been disabled for a while. Was there anything like that?

    If not, please enable WP debugging by adding following lines to the "wp-config.php" file:

    define('WP_DEBUG', true);
    define('WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false);
    define('WP_DEBUG_LOG', true);

    Make sure that these lines are above the "/* That's all, stop editing */" line and then wait until the next managed backup expected run (you can change schedule to be more often if you want). If backup doesn't get created, download the "debug.log" file from inside the "/wp-content" folder on your server, rename it to "debug.txt" and share it with me here, please.

    Getting back to those snapshots: could you please check and share file names for the newest backup files that you got stored on your GDrive but that are not included (visible) in "Restore" snapshot list?

    Best regards,
    Adam

    Hi Adam,

    Thanks for your long answer.

    You're right, I should have been more specific about that By "enter" I meant clicking on its name and then on a big blue "Restore" button. That's actually the same as going directly to "Restore" option from the drop-down list.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

    No, backups that you see in The Hub are only from Managed Backups, those are backups that are stored in our Cloud while "snapshots" (so backups like those pushed to GDrive etc) are considered as completely separate.

    I understand, but I don't like this. I feel like WPMU Dev is pushing me to buy into more storage capacity. I understand that you need to earn as much as I can, but I've got unlimited Google Drive storage with Google's G Suite for a few dollars a month, so I really don't feel like paying double that amount for 'just' 100GB of storage.

    Snapshot Pro even supports Google Drive backups, so why does The Hub don't make use of those features too? Maybe I just don't understand the benefits of the 'managed backups' as opposed to a snapshot to Google Drive enough.

    Getting back to those snapshots: could you please check and share file names for the newest backup files that you got stored on your GDrive but that are not included (visible) in "Restore" snapshot list?

    Here's a full list of the daily Google Drive backups that I've made with Snapshot Pro, at this moment. Only the last 6 are visible in Snapshot Pro. Seems to me that the number of displaying backups is capped to 6.

    Hi Dominique,

    At the moment we don't have information if and when Managed Backups will include external backup options as it's currently a part of the membership option and offers only storage on our servers.

    Difference between Managed Backups and Regular Snapshots is that regular snapshots have options to choose what you want to backup, Database, Media files, Plugins and Themes or altogether, while Managed Backups do a full backup, which means your entire WP folder with all the database tables.
    Regular snapshots will not backup your entire WP installation, it's limited to selected options.
    Also, Managed Backups offer a full backup of entire multisite at once while regular snapshots needs to have separate backup configured for each subsite separately.

    As for the number of backups, this is indeed limited to 6 at the moment but it's something our developers have already changed in the next release that's being developed.
    In the meantime you can edit /wp-content/plugins/snapshot/views/snapshots/restore.php on line 371 and change 6 to number of backups that you want to show.

    Best regards,
    Predrag
