Posts won't open unless I select them using Categories

I have the main blog and several sub-blogs, all with posts done from Admin.

First, I cannot find a reliable way to post into a sub-blog. I go to Dashboard, MyBlogs and set Primary Blog to the sub-blog path I want to post to. Sometimes this works but most of the time my post still ends up in the main blog.

Second, even after getting posts correct, I cannot view the posts in the normal fashion.

1. If I select the Category I assigned to a post, I get a list of the posts. Selecting a post opens the post properly.

2a. If I select Blogs, I get a list of the main blog plus the sub-blogs. Doing "Visit Blog" for the main blog takes me to a blank page with no way to display the posts.

2b. Doing "Visit Blog" for a sub-blog takes me to a page saying "Sorry, we can't find the content you're looking for at this URL. Please try selecting a menu item from above or to the side of this message to get where you'd like to go."

How do I get posts to blogs to work properly?

    Hiya,

I cannot find a reliable way to post into a sub-blog

You need to make sure you're in the admin panel of the blog you want to post to. Ex BLOG.domain.tld/wp-admin/

    1. If I select the Category I assigned to a post, I get a list of the posts. Selecting a post opens the post properly.

That sounds like the expected behavior to me.

2a. If I select Blogs, I get a list of the main blog plus the sub-blogs. Doing "Visit Blog" for the main blog takes me to a blank page with no way to display the posts.

Are you referring to the "Site Admin > Blogs" page?

2b. Doing "Visit Blog" for a sub-blog takes me to a page saying "Sorry, we can't find the content you're looking for at this URL. Please try selecting a menu item from above or to the side of this message to get where you'd like to go."

Can we get a link to the page displaying this message?

    Thanks,
    Andrew

2a. I am referring to being in the site and selecting Blogs

Ah, you're using BuddyPress. You didn't mention that.

These two blogs look fine to me:
    http://usa1buzz.com/harrisonschmittblog/
    http://usa1buzz.com/climatedeception/

These two may be having issues due to the underscore in the blog name. I would try recreating those blogs (delete and then create again):
    http://www.usa1buzz.com/climateclash_ed/
    http://www.usa1buzz.com/climateclash_eric/

    Thanks,
    Andrew

You may be correct about the underscores. I will test this after this message.

Regarding the first two links you listed above, perhaps you are seeing something different than I am. When I click Visit Blog for them, it takes me to a WPMU page, where clicking on the Comment link gives Error 404 - Not Found.

Did you actually get to see the posts?

Also, if I begin at http://www.usa1buzz.com/blogs/

and click on the top (primary) blog, it takes me to a blank page where I cannot get to the post.

    Thanks,

    Ed

Hmm, looks like a problem with the first post. Have you tried creating another post on either of those blogs?

Also, if I begin at http://www.usa1buzz.com/blogs/

and click on the top (primary) blog, it takes me to a blank page where I cannot get to the post.

    I get taken here:
    http://www.usa1buzz.com/

That's where it should be taking me. If you want to publish a post go here:
    http://www.usa1buzz.com/wp-admin/

    Thanks,
    Andrew

Here is more information on navigating between blogs inside your dashboard - http://help.edublogs.org/2009/08/31/navigating-to-different-blog-dashboards-inside-your-account/

You will probably find the other information on our Help and Support site helpful for your users - http://help.edublogs.org/getting-started-with-edublogs/

Regarding your question on "how to enable a BP theme for all blogs" you need to activate site-wide via Site Admin > Themes (see https://premium.wpmudev.org/wpmu-manual/changing-themes-sitewide/ ). I probably need to add a section to the BuddyPress manual on activating themes for the blogs in addition to the information on BuddyPress themes.

The reason why we decided to say in the BuddyPress Manaul to only enable the BP theme for the main blog is not all BuddyPress themes work on WPMU i.e. while our themes work on both WPMU and blogs running BuddyPress -- we didn't want users being caught out installing other designers BP themes on WPMU and having compatibility issues.

As another test, I just added a new post in the main blog.

I can get to this post by selecting Category: USA1;*Constitution
This, as you say is how it should work.

But when I select Blogs, and get a list of the Blogs, then select the top (main) blog where I put the new post, I would expect to see a list of the posts to this main blog.

But, as you point out, it takes me to http://www.usa1buzz.com/

So, by going through Blogs, there is no way to get to the posts in each blog. Is this normal?

If so, then this would mean the only way to get to a post is via categories. It also kind of makes the Blog list rather useless.

    Thanks,

    Ed

    Hiya,

I can get to this post by selecting Category: USA1;*Constitution
This, as you say is how it should work.

You can always add the recent posts widget to the frontpage.

But when I select Blogs, and get a list of the Blogs, then select the top (main) blog where I put the new post, I would expect to see a list of the posts to this main blog.

The main blog on a BuddyPress site functions more like a portal than a traditional blog. Again, you can add the recent posts widget to the frontpage.

Erm. Have you tried posting on any blog other than the main blog. Again, the main blog is more of a portal rather than a traditional blog on a BuddyPress site. The user blogs (sub blogs) should list posts right on the frontpage.

    Thanks,
    Andrew

The purpose of the Blogs Director is to display a list of all the blogs created on your site and a link to their latest post ( https://premium.wpmudev.org/the-buddypress-manual/all-about-blog-tracking/). The idea is when you click on a Blogs title it takes you to visit that blog.

For example if you click on Harrison Schmitt it takes you to http://usa1buzz.com/harrisonschmittblog/. If you wanted to write a post for http://usa1buzz.com/harrisonschmittblog/ you would need to go to the admin area of that blog (i.e. http://usa1buzz.com/harrisonschmittblog/wp-admin) and then click on Post > Add New

In the case of your main blog http://www.usa1buzz.com/ it isn't taking you to the blog post homepage which is why you can't see the list of the main posts.

Thank you Sue for the references.

I created another blog and this time added a post according to the first reference in order to make sure it was added to the new blog. I also assigned the new post to Category: USA1,*Constitution.

Then I went back to my website and selected Blogs, taking me to http://www.usa1buzz.com/blogs/
where the second blog "New Blog One" is the blog I just created.

Then I click Visit Blog and it takes me back to an original problem I began this thread with:

2b. Doing "Visit Blog" for a sub-blog takes me to a page saying "Sorry, we can't find the content you're looking for at this URL. Please try selecting a menu item from above or to the side of this message to get where you'd like to go."

Yet, when I follow the Category path to the new post, I see the post just fine.

It seems to me that clicking Visit Blog should take me to a list of posts in that blog.

So, I am still going around in circles.

    Thanks,

    Ed

Hi Ed, your new blog http://www.usa1buzz.com/newblogone/ is doing the same as what was doing http://www.usa1buzz.com/climateclash_eric/ amd http://www.usa1buzz.com/climateclash_ed/

Both http://www.usa1buzz.com/climateclash_eric/ amd http://www.usa1buzz.com/climateclash_ed/ are broken blogs which is why you are getting the message "Sorry, we can't find the content you're looking for at this URL. Please try selecting a menu item from above or to the side of this message to get where you'd like to go."

With blog URLs you can only use numbers and lowercase letters. Absolutely no characters especially underscore as it will always break the blog.

My guess would be that http://www.usa1buzz.com/newblogone/ is also a broken blog for some reason.

I must have a way with creating blogs.

To create NewBlogOne, I first went to Dashboard, MyBlogs and set the dropdown list box to the main blog.

Then I go to Site Admin, Blogs and see the list of my blogs.
Below the blog list is Add New, where I added a new blog, using the address extension and name for the new blog.

Then, to add a post to this blog, I went to Dashboard, MyBlogs, selected the new blog and pressed Dashboard. (I think this is the same as pressing "backend" from the list where the blog was created.)

To further test, I just created NewBlogTwo, added a post, went to Blogs, pressed Visit Blog and reproduced the same error as above.

    Thanks,

    Ed

I am using BP 1.2.3 and I assume the latest WPMU. Installation was done by SimpleScripts running on the Control Panel of my webhost.

Ok. This time I made sure Site Admin was set to the main blog. Then I went to
    http://www.usa1buzz.com/blogs/

Then I clicked Create a Blog, and created NewBlogThree. I pressed the link and it took me to a new WPMU form where I clicked Comment and it took me to a new Hello World form. This is definitely progress because before this was a 404 error.

I added a comment. It went back to the same page and did not show my comment.
I added a second comment, and same thing happened.

I found two emails in my Outlook with links for me to approve my comments. I approve. I go back to New Blog Three and comments are still not shown.

Now, I go back to main site and click Blogs. New Blog Three is at the top. I click Visit Blog ....
... and .... it takes me to New Blog Three but none of my comments have been recorded.

So, I go back to Dashboard, My Blogs and click Dashboard for NewBlogThree. It takes me to a WP login where I cannot make my original password let me in.

I press Lost your password? and enter info to get new password. I get an email to approve the new password, click link and viola it says: "The e-mail could not be sent.
Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function.."

In summary, we did get further by creating a new blog in the register but we still did not get a blog that accepted comments or editing.

    Thanks,

    Ed

I know this is a different kind of question but it follows from the strange behavior of my BP.

What is the probability that my problem stems from an installation error?

I ask this because I just installed a new BP on another domain on my server. It seemed to install OK but I find there is now crosstalk with usa1buzz. For example, when I use the admin area of my usa1buzz, I suddenly find I am in the domain of the new installation.

Since I am not commercially online, the best time to start all over is now. Can you tell me how much is saved in the database if I reinstall BP? Will the database save any of my settings, categories, colors, etc? Any thing else to be aware of?

    Thanks,

    Ed

I am restarting with a whole new installation. I believe all the problems I encountered and described in this thread were the result of an installation that somehow was corrupted.

I have now recovered my admin and database files and will now attempt to save the configurations I did for Categories, Theme settings and anything else so I don't have to remember all the settings I made.

I do not even trust the database, although it is possible it is OK. So I will also start with a whole new database.

I will appreciate any advice offered that might save me some time in this recovery.

    Thanks for all your help,

    Ed
