Preventing link rot on SEO-optimized URLs?

I just did my first import from one of our old Manila sites into WordPress. It's on my development machine, but I noticed an interesting problem. The old URL used ID numbers:

http://xampp.dev/stories/storyReader$53

The new site, however, uses SEO-friendly URLs, like:

http://xampp.dev/wordpress/authorpower/getting-started-as-an-author/

Now, the thing is, if we changed the page title on the old article, the ID number didn't change (don't go into how they formatted the URLs, I know). But in WordPress, if we changed the article title from, say "Getting started as an author" to, say, "How to get started as an author", then the new URL would become:

http://xampp.dev/wordpress/authorpower/how-to-get-started-as-an-author/

And all of a sudden the original 'getting-started' URL is rotten. How do you get around this? Isn't this a strong case for going back to ID numbers for posts/pages?

Thanks!
