Question, I want

Question, I want to set up a wp multisite. Plan on having 5 to 7 sites under it which will be mapped to unique domains. Is it better to set it up as a subdirectory or subdomain to do this. I plan on using an ssl on all the new domains as well.
so https://mainsite.com i will add https://mainsite.com/site2 or https://site2.mainsite.com and it will be mapped to https://mainsite2.com and so on for the other 5-6.

    Hello Brian,

I hope you'r well today and thank you for your question!

With sub-domain based setup a single, standard SSL certificate would cover entire site. However it won't cover mapped domains and for mapping domains it's better to use sub-domains.

Personally I would go for a sub-domain setup as it's much more universal, works better with mapped domains and is considered a "recommended" configuration for Multisite.

The things to remember though would be:

    1. you will need a wildcard SSL certificate for your main domain so your main site and all the sub-sites would be protected
    2. in order to protect mapped domains you will either need a multi-domain certificate (that would include main domain, sub-domains and mapped domains) or - if you host supports that - separate single certificates for mapped domains.

If you have further questions on this, let me know.

    Kind regards,
    Adam
