    Hi militarymama!

I looked at the plugin pages "links are below" and they say they are compatible with BuddyPress!

    Greetings Rhonda,

Thank you for this great question and a significant item to bring up.

BuddyPress in itself is way more then just a forum plugin and MTB1701 is spot on that Buddy Press is compatible with Pro Sites and Market Press. There is also the Forums plugin too.

It is also my opinion that you will have a lot of work on your hands if you initiate forums with moderation, spammers, and the discontented.

Note: Most businesses do not offer forums.

Here on WPMU Dev we have to monitor the forums around the clock and many times we are facing posts that must be edited and in very rare occasion completely deleted - and that is in a paid only forum.

Consider the work that will be necessary on a daily basis maintaining those forums and that you have been warned.

To your success Rhonda no matter what path you decide to take regarding this idea.

    Cheers, Joe

I recommend BBpress. It is organic to wordpress (topics and replies are custom post types) and works very well. The default styling looks nice and can be CSSed into being what you want.

There are a few addons that make it easier to format text, add pictures, videos etc. I use Rich Text Editor for Comments right now, but may try something else later. The latest version of BBpress integrates nicely with BuddyPress if you ever decide to go that route with your network.

I've been using BBpress for over a year now, and I do think it really is the best forum choice for using with WordPress. A close second would be Simple:stuck_out_tongue:ress - both look good and work well but the interface concept between the two is different. BBpress is conceptually more like the newer generation of forums (of the type seen here on WPMU DEV - which uses an older version of BBPress). SImple:stuck_out_tongue:ress is updated software and works well with WordPress, but it is conceptually more in line with the older generation of forums, using a traditional forum interface that is good for more hierarchichal forums.

Your needs and desires for your forum may dictate the type you want to use. The newer generation of forums gives priority to individual topics, where the older generation gives priority to topic categories (though the latest versions of BBPress can be manipulated to bridge the gap between the older generation and newer generation of forums).
